Just wanted to share this quick edit I made of a tune from the latest SBTRK album featuring vocals by Ezra Koenig. I know this guy’s voice verges on being annoying, but something about this song always gets me and I wanted to have a version I could drop for the dancefloor. Attention all my Angelenos! Got a whole lot cooking this week for Grammy festivities, starting tonight. I’m doing a not-so-open event earlier in the night with Questlove & Charli XCX which I’m pretty stoked about, but then the real party will be at Acabar afterwards with my BKLA partner DJ Cato and this month’s guests Aaron DRM & Erik The Red (who collectively run Bastard Jazz Records). Very happy to share this latest remix with you all (and make it available for FREE). This is a collaboration I did with my homie and DJ partner Canyon Cody (Subsuelo mastermind) for local LA cumbia superheroes Buyepongo. These guys have been keeping the heavy roots alive and well around Southern California for a minute, and I’m hoping this is the first of more collaborations to come. We took their classic cumbia tribute to the masters and brought it to the club. Fans of 808’s and moombahton should find plenty to like about this one.

I hope you’re all stepping into the new year on the good foot! I personally am suffering from a serious fever/head cold partly due to a bit more partying than my aging body is capable of. But I always persevere! With music as my medicine I’ll be back at it tomorrow night with my homie DJ Cato, bringing our eclectic dance party BKLA back to the left coast. We will be digging deep for some seriously soulful dancefloor flavors at one of my favorite spots in West Hollywood- Acabar. This place is truly an oasis, big open dancefloor, top tier soundsystem, and beautiful vintage Persian design. Anyone in the LA area should swing through and help us rock the casbah! More info here. BTW, please please check out Romare. I’m struggling to think of someone so suited to your style. His EPs have blown me away. ‘Roots’ is pure tribal techy house heaven ‘Taste of Honey’ is so old school you can smell it, ‘Hey Now’ sampling a Nina Simone refrain and a stripped back piano and ‘Your Love’ with a cracking sample of ‘Fever’ is something you will want everyone to hear as it ticks all of the boxes with it’s sweaty and slow R&B vibe. Three EPs, the latest on Ninja Tune, and all of them are worth selling the house for. It’s been a while since a single artist has excited me so much. Fun for all the family!!

After an extended hiatus, Mixtape Riot Radio returns! It’s been almost a full year since my last podcast for Brooklyn Radio, and I’m not proud of that. Busy year, sure, but definitely one of my resolutions is to get back in gear and keep these mixes coming more regularly. As per usual, I pulled an eclectic array of new songs from the soulful side of music-topia- many of which you’ll probably recognize from previous posts on this site. Not exactly a “best of”, but more like “a few of my favorite things” from 2014. Songs that stayed in heavy rotation, albums that really stood out, and work from artists that were very active in the past year. The mix includes music by D’Angelo, Kindness, Jungle, Little Dragon, SZA, Quantic, Sinkane, Moses Sumney and a lot more of the good stuff.
