I hope you’re all stepping into the new year on the good foot! I personally am suffering from a serious fever/head cold partly due to a bit more partying than my aging body is capable of. But I always persevere! With music as my medicine I’ll be back at it tomorrow night with my homie DJ Cato, bringing our eclectic dance party BKLA back to the left coast. We will be digging deep for some seriously soulful dancefloor flavors at one of my favorite spots in West Hollywood- Acabar. This place is truly an oasis, big open dancefloor, top tier soundsystem, and beautiful vintage Persian design. Anyone in the LA area should swing through and help us rock the casbah! More info here. Got a bunch of new goodies to share with you- some more mellow moody stuff, and a couple dancefloor fillers as well. Artwork today comes courtesy of Aerosyn Lex.

Little Dragon :       Cat Rider (Poolside Remix)

Blood Orange :       Is It All Over My Face & Tower of Meaning
nice Arthur Russell medley from this recent benefit compilation

Mary J. Blige :       Right Now
produced by Disclosure, need I say more?

KAYTRANADA :       Leave Me Alone ft. Shay Lia

Bonobo :       Cirrus

Dorsia :       Ghana (HNNY Remix)

Miguel Migs :       We Can Make It ft. Omar

Werkha :       Cube & Puzzle

Sampology :       Shine A Light ft. Daniel Merriweather
this tune is getting me UP right now, uplifting soulful house meets afro global bass vibe.

Paul White :       Where You Gonna Go?
deep.

Moses Sumney :       Plastic deeper. Probably the best live show I saw in 2014 was Moses Sumney.

Lovin all of them. Got a few already, and some others to keep an eye on.

BTW, please please check out Romare. I’m struggling to think of someone so suited to your style. His EPs have blown me away. ‘Roots’ is pure tribal techy house heaven ‘Taste of Honey’ is so old school you can smell it, ‘Hey Now’ sampling a Nina Simone refrain and a stripped back piano and ‘Your Love’ with a cracking sample of ‘Fever’ is something you will want everyone to hear as it ticks all of the boxes with it’s sweaty and slow R&B vibe. Three EPs, the latest on Ninja Tune, and all of them are worth selling the house for. It’s been a while since a single artist has excited me so much. Fun for all the family!!

Mixtape Riot Radio #012

episode12
After an extended hiatus, Mixtape Riot Radio returns! It’s been almost a full year since my last podcast for Brooklyn Radio, and I’m not proud of that. Busy year, sure, but definitely one of my resolutions is to get back in gear and keep these mixes coming more regularly. As per usual, I pulled an eclectic array of new songs from the soulful side of music-topia- many of which you’ll probably recognize from previous posts on this site. Not exactly a “best of”, but more like “a few of my favorite things” from 2014. Songs that stayed in heavy rotation, albums that really stood out, and work from artists that were very active in the past year. The mix includes music by D’Angelo, Kindness, Jungle, Little Dragon,  SZA, Quantic, Sinkane, Moses Sumney and a lot more of the good stuff.

full tracklist and download of the mix available HERE

Out Of Hand

outofhand

‘Tis the season for giving, and there are few causes I think more worthy of receiving a gift right now than Doctors Without Borders in their ongoing fight against Ebola and other health emergencies around the world. “Out Of Hand” started as a freestyle cipher on the sidewalk in the Lower East Side after worldwide hustler Brooklyn Shanti brought Sierra Leonean singer/rapper Bajah to one of my shows. We were all talking about how badly we wanted to do something to help out, and then a freestyle broke out and Shanti had the wherewithal to press record. In the following weeks we turned that organic inspiration into a proper song, sending files back and forth between LA and Brooklyn, and this is the final result. We’ve made the song available for download with a contribution of any size donated to Doctors Without Borders (one of the leading organizations currently working in West Africa). We put up this site with a nice little informative video and more details: www.MusicEqualsMedecine.com. If you appreciate what we’re up to, please take a minute to donate or spread the word.

Black Messiah

messiah

Thank you lord! Just after most deejays and media outlets started posting their year-end best album lists- along comes the REAL best album (perhaps in the past 5 years?!?). In case you didn’t know, I’m a pretty big fan of D’angelo, and recieving Black Messiah could not have come at a more perfect moment. We all need this album right now. Love, madness, psychedelic soul and sexiness all put together perfectly by a team of geniuses, sounding fresher than a gallon of Listerine (even after a 14 year hiatus). And don’t get it twisted, the man is not on some Yeezus ego-maniacal trip. Get the album for youself and see what I’m talking about. There’s a bunch of other funky-as-hell tunes I’m happy to be sharing with you all for the holidaze as well. Cheers to keeping your hips in motion and your spirit lifted!

D’Angelo :       Betray My Heart &       Really Love

Mark Ronson :       Uptown Funk ft. Bruno Mars

Usher :       She Came To Give It To You ft. Nicki Minaj)

The Rub ft. Tatiana Owens :       Bring On The Love (Disco Mix)

Owiny Sigoma Band :       Nyiduonge Drums

Ricky Blaze :       Overrated ft. Kranium & Shaggy

Serocee :       Propellah

ODESZA ft. Zyra :       Say My Name (Hermitude Remix)

AlunaGeorge :       Supernatural (Pomo Remix)

Pomo :       Start Again ft. Andrea Cormier

Thanks But No Thanks

flaggie

What the hell America?!? I’ve been extremely angry, sad, confused, and more than a few other emotions over the past couple of weeks. Recent events have brought to the surface all the racist hostility which remains in so many places of power here. Luckily there were still a few things to be thankful for on Thanksgiving- gathering with family and friends, breaking bread, cooking together, rain to break the drought. And definitely I’m always thankful for discovering and sharing new music. Today’s playlist is more about songs that are helping keep me sane, soothing the soul, rather than political or protest songs (which would be completely appropriate as well). I hope they find their way into your ears with some of that healing love that we all need so badly right now.

Gabriel Garzón-Montano :       6 8 &       Everything Is Everything

Raury :       God's Whisper

Lion Babe :       Jump Hi ft. Childish Gambino

Liquid Liquid :       Scraper

Saravah Soul :       Mussum (Quantic Remix)

AbJo :       Vibração Comigo (Vibe With Me)

Mura Masa :       Lotus Eater

Hailu Mergia & The Walias :       Musicawi Silt

Mac DeMarco :       Passing Out Pieces

Galimatias & Alina Baraz :       Drift

Bobby Womack :       Please Forgive My Heart

  • Jon

Holy crap, AbJo sampled Madvillain’s “Raid”, awesome!

Thank you for your sharing. I am worried that I lack creative ideas. It is your article that makes me full of hope. Thank you. But, I have a question, can you help me?

Mr. Schitzo Disco

Big mixed bag of new tunes for you today to help kick off your week. I experienced some major tectonic plate shifts in my emotional landscape last week, so maybe you can hear a bit of that in the selections. Perhaps you’ve been feeling some type of way yourself, and need the musical medication as bad as I do. Or maybe you’ve just been going through the motions on the treadmill and need a little synthesizer disco love to creep in and grab your ventricles with a rebel takeover. Whatever the case may be, press play and see where the melody takes you. Artwork today is from collage maestro Eugenia Loli, who I started following recently and am really digging.

Niia :       Body
Can’t say I’m a huge fan of the rest of this gal’s EP, but the trademark Robin Hannibal production on this song is top-notch as always

Fat Freddy’s Drop :       Slings & Arrows
always a good day when I hear a new song from this crew

Sinkane :       How We Be &       New Name
I keep returning to this album and loving it more. Gonna make this year’s top 10 for sure.

Joe Hertz :       Isolate ft. Kaleem Taylor
smoothed out head nod vibe featuring this UK soul crooner

Shy Girls :       When I Say I Love U (Saux Remix)
sexy time with a little bounce, from this Dutch producer

Jordan Bratton :       Must Be (Esta Remix)
nice stepper R&B flavor getting the flip by Soulection producer ESTA

Vic Mensa :       Down On My Luck
looking forward to hearing more catchy rap from this up-n-comer

Caribou :       Can't Do Without You
another album that will probably be on this year’s top 10. so good

Pomo :       Vibrator
this funky Canadian continues to deliver pure murderation with each new track

Alina Baraz & Galimatias :       Pretty Thoughts
I was a little late hearing about this girl, but I’m sure the name will continue to spread like wildfire with vibey masterpieces like this

Darondo :       Didn't I (Dave Allison Rework)
underground sweet soul classic gets a nice subtle 2-step remix by this disco-edit don dadda
