Brand Spanking New

joshua-tree

This past weekend marked another full loop around the sun for me, and with a little help from my friends and fam and good music, I’m thankfully feeling brand spankin new! Got a full 3 days of celebrating in, including a nice overnight getaway to Joshua Tree for some wavy times around the campfire. Today’s batch of tunes should provide you with a nice balance of feel-good, head-nod, trip-out, and the obligatory touch of grime.

Pharrell :       Happy (NEUS Remix) &       Brand New ft. Justin Timberlake
this French electro house producer absolutely slayed skateboard P’s blissed out smash with some punchy funk, and how come more people aren’t playing this other song from GIRL?!? There’s also a nice reggae-ish cut with Alicia Keys on there that I’m not mad at.

Jaytee :       Thank You Remix ( Busta Rhymes x Q-tip x Alicia Myers )
this funky Aussie might snap your neck with his flip of this recent meeting of the minds (minus the Kanye). Always loved the Alicia Myers original…

Bondax :       Giving It All
poppy house vibes with a fish-hook chorus that won’t let go after one little nibble.

Cut Copy :       We Are Explorers
new new wave meistros do what they do best on this one.

Sharam Jey & Sirus Hood :       Picture Picture
cowbell heavy club stuff that makes the people bounce.

Duke Dumont ft. A*M*E :       Need U (100%)
deeper harder stronger late night house from Mr. Dumont

JD Samson & MEN :       Club Thang
another subversive banger from some perennial badasses

Shit Robot :       We Got A Love ft. Reggie Watts
get over the band name and lose yourself in the late night glory of this collabo with the talented Mr. Watts

Satin Jackets :       You Make Me Feel Good
shout out to regular reader Dangerscouse for the heads up on this one. Pure sunrise gold!

SBTRKT :       Resolute
while I have been underwhelmed by most of what I’ve heard by this guy since the self-titled album (with expectations that were undoubtedly set very high), there’s some beats on this new ep that are definitely making me want to hear more of the good good.

Listen Well

record-player1

I’m doing my best not to be jealous of my many homies currently enjoying the insane amount of music and partying at SXSW right now, but even the best playlist can’t compete with open bars, adrenaline fueled unsigned bands & stage diving. There’s always next year… In the meantime, enjoy this hearty helping of newness- a little more on the electronic/indie tip today, but still some things for the soulful crowd. Also, if you’re into drooling over vintage hi-fi equipment like I am, you will probably enjoy this site that I jacked today’s lovely turntable pic from (shouts to Ixley for the link).

Jerome LOL :       Always ft. Sara Z
nice to hear a different side of this half of moombah & deep house loving LOL Boys (who I guess disbanded). More from Jerome here.

Phil Beaudreau :       Won't Get Away
don’t know much about this LA local, but I’m liking this song a lot.

Mr. Little Jeans :       Good Mistake (YACHT Remix)
acid infused electronic sounds with some heavy grit in the mix courtesy of this team

Brother In Arms :       All This Love
my boys in the Bay (DJ Theory & J Boogie) have formed this supergroup and are busy making a very tasteful blend of disco, house and classics.

Flight Facilities :       Stand Still (Mario Basanov Remix)
this ever-reliable Australian disco duo get a nice trippy late night remix from the funky Lithuanian

Clean Bandit ft. Jess Glynne :       Rather Be (The Magician Remix)
bouncy and bright with a little wobble bass to keep it grounded. Another housey hit from the man with the magic touch

RÜFÜS :       Desert Night
more vibey house business here from these Aussies.

Holy Ghost! :       Dance A Little Closer
funky dance rock from this NYC crew who love to moog

The Preatures :       Is This How You Feel (Classixx Remix)
hello 80’s yacht rock! Nothing in here to make me mad.

Sohn :       Artifice
apparently this guy is very popular in the UK, but this moody (vaguely Radiohead-ish) song is the first I’m hearing from him

Milosh :       Hear In You
the voice behind Rhye (one of my favorite albums from last year), getting more minimal and electronic on his solo dolo

Recloose ft. Joe Dukie :       Deeper Waters
why not finish off with an oldie but goodie from this Detroit ex-pat who stays true to his name.

Endless Carnival Mix

stunmomix

A little while back, a group of Bay Area sunglasses enthusiasts reached out to me about making a mixtape for their collective. They call themselves Stunner Of The Month, and basically they provide crazy shades to thousands of subscribers on a monthly basis, always accompanied by a fresh mixtape. If that sounds appealing to you, check em out. Because it was the week of Carnival, and Mardi Gras,  and a million other historically related parties around the world, I decided to make a mix to help keep everyone shaking long after Fat Tuesday. The tracklist is heavy on tropical vibes from equatorial locations where stunner shades are a must. There’s plenty of reggae and dancehall selections, but also a taste of Brazil, Trinidad, Panama, Dominican Republic, Ghana, Colombia, Angola and a few other places where people like spicy food. The mix peppers in a few Captain Planet remixes and finishes off with a brand new unreleased original tune that will be on my upcoming album “Esperanto Slang” which drops later this Spring on Bastard Jazz.
