Mixtape Riot Radio #012

episode12
After an extended hiatus, Mixtape Riot Radio returns! It’s been almost a full year since my last podcast for Brooklyn Radio, and I’m not proud of that. Busy year, sure, but definitely one of my resolutions is to get back in gear and keep these mixes coming more regularly. As per usual, I pulled an eclectic array of new songs from the soulful side of music-topia- many of which you’ll probably recognize from previous posts on this site. Not exactly a “best of”, but more like “a few of my favorite things” from 2014. Songs that stayed in heavy rotation, albums that really stood out, and work from artists that were very active in the past year. The mix includes music by D’Angelo, Kindness, Jungle, Little Dragon,  SZA, Quantic, Sinkane, Moses Sumney and a lot more of the good stuff.

full tracklist and download of the mix available HERE

Out Of Hand

outofhand

‘Tis the season for giving, and there are few causes I think more worthy of receiving a gift right now than Doctors Without Borders in their ongoing fight against Ebola and other health emergencies around the world. “Out Of Hand” started as a freestyle cipher on the sidewalk in the Lower East Side after worldwide hustler Brooklyn Shanti brought Sierra Leonean singer/rapper Bajah to one of my shows. We were all talking about how badly we wanted to do something to help out, and then a freestyle broke out and Shanti had the wherewithal to press record. In the following weeks we turned that organic inspiration into a proper song, sending files back and forth between LA and Brooklyn, and this is the final result. We’ve made the song available for download with a contribution of any size donated to Doctors Without Borders (one of the leading organizations currently working in West Africa). We put up this site with a nice little informative video and more details: www.MusicEqualsMedecine.com. If you appreciate what we’re up to, please take a minute to donate or spread the word.

Black Messiah

messiah

Thank you lord! Just after most deejays and media outlets started posting their year-end best album lists- along comes the REAL best album (perhaps in the past 5 years?!?). In case you didn’t know, I’m a pretty big fan of D’angelo, and recieving Black Messiah could not have come at a more perfect moment. We all need this album right now. Love, madness, psychedelic soul and sexiness all put together perfectly by a team of geniuses, sounding fresher than a gallon of Listerine (even after a 14 year hiatus). And don’t get it twisted, the man is not on some Yeezus ego-maniacal trip. Get the album for youself and see what I’m talking about. There’s a bunch of other funky-as-hell tunes I’m happy to be sharing with you all for the holidaze as well. Cheers to keeping your hips in motion and your spirit lifted!

D’Angelo :       Betray My Heart &       Really Love

Mark Ronson :       Uptown Funk ft. Bruno Mars

Usher :       She Came To Give It To You ft. Nicki Minaj)

The Rub ft. Tatiana Owens :       Bring On The Love (Disco Mix)

Owiny Sigoma Band :       Nyiduonge Drums

Ricky Blaze :       Overrated ft. Kranium & Shaggy

Serocee :       Propellah

ODESZA ft. Zyra :       Say My Name (Hermitude Remix)

AlunaGeorge :       Supernatural (Pomo Remix)

Pomo :       Start Again ft. Andrea Cormier

Thanks But No Thanks

flaggie

What the hell America?!? I’ve been extremely angry, sad, confused, and more than a few other emotions over the past couple of weeks. Recent events have brought to the surface all the racist hostility which remains in so many places of power here. Luckily there were still a few things to be thankful for on Thanksgiving- gathering with family and friends, breaking bread, cooking together, rain to break the drought. And definitely I’m always thankful for discovering and sharing new music. Today’s playlist is more about songs that are helping keep me sane, soothing the soul, rather than political or protest songs (which would be completely appropriate as well). I hope they find their way into your ears with some of that healing love that we all need so badly right now.

Gabriel Garzón-Montano :       6 8 &       Everything Is Everything

Raury :       God's Whisper

Lion Babe :       Jump Hi ft. Childish Gambino

Liquid Liquid :       Scraper

Saravah Soul :       Mussum (Quantic Remix)

AbJo :       Vibração Comigo (Vibe With Me)

Mura Masa :       Lotus Eater

Hailu Mergia & The Walias :       Musicawi Silt

Mac DeMarco :       Passing Out Pieces

Galimatias & Alina Baraz :       Drift

Bobby Womack :       Please Forgive My Heart
