Say Hello To Van Ike

VanIke
Very happy to finally bring this new project of mine to light! Van Ike has been something I’ve been doing on the side with my longtime friend Sam Barsh (who was my first roommate in Brooklyn at age 19). Friends for ages, we’ve basically been leading parallel music careers, and only just started collaborating recently in our spare time (when Sam isn’t in the studio writing songs with Kendrick Lamar, Aloe Blacc & Macy Gray). The sound of Van Ike sprung naturally from our mutual love of Hall & Oates, Dwele, Pharrell, and Mayer Hawthorne. It’s a little bit throwback, a little bit now, and a lot of soul- basically doing what we feel and love. This first offering (which premiered yesterday at OkayPlayer.com) is our tribute to one of this summer’s sexiest tunes- “The Worst” by Jhene Aiko. Consider this just an appetizer, because our debut “Notes To Self” EP will be dropping very soon. FREE DOWNLOAD below, grab it while it’s hot…

Also, for people in LA – we’re doing our first live show TONIGHT at Sadie in Hollywood (I know, I know, sorry for late notice). For those of you in NYC, you can catch us Aug. 31st at the James Hotel in SOHO or Sept. 2nd at The Drink in Williamsburg.

Get Gone Remix

GetGoneRemix

Remix tiiiiiiime! Yes, once again I threw away all the hard work I put into making a song, and completely remade the music from scratch. It’s actually a very fun exercise as a producer. Remixing yourself gives you a chance to look at what you’ve made as objectively as possible, and then it provides the opportunity to reinvent yourself or express another side of your creativity. It never ceases to amaze me how different the mood and feel of a song can be, using the same chords and notes, but different sounds and structure. The other thing I love about making a remix, is that I can give it away for free. So press play, then hit download, and if you like what we’re doing, please show some support. Peace, from this here Hooligan. Also, big shout out to Mathieu Bitton for the photography and art direction.

Great article. My husband and I went through bankruptcy several years ago. It was an incredibly difficult and painful experience. Luckily, however, we had a great bankruptcy attorney. She really helped us out a lot.

Get Gone

GetGone-Cover

Remember how I’ve been so busy lately? Well this project is one of the main reasons. Less than a year ago, a mutual friend connected me and vocalist Shana Halligan. She swung by my studio, we started talking about the music we love and the records we idolize, and a few hours later we had a full new song almost completed. We’ve been working together ever since, developing our sound, and I’m happy to announce the upcoming release of our first single together- “Get Gone”. There is much more to come, so stay tuned for that. She’s also the voice featured on the latest Thievery Corporation single, and she will be leaving to do an East Coast tour with them starting tomorrow. Catch her if you can, and stay tuned for more good things from “The Hooligans“.

Shout out to VIBE.com for featuring the premier, the single is AVAILABLE NOW along with a remix that pushes the song in a totally different direction. Support is always much appreciated so help spread the word!

Planet Rock 1 Year Anniversary

pr-oneyear

Hard to believe it’s been a full year of rocking Saturday nights with my DJ partner in crime Canyon Cody. Our lil baby Planet Rock has grown to be one of the most raucous and consistently bumping parties on the East side of LA (or the whole city for that matter). We may have a reputation as a destination for twerkers, but there’s plenty of music snobs and old school heads in the crowd as well. We always work to keep the mixes creative, while remaining devoted to the art of moving butts. If you’re in the LA area and have been snoozing, WAKE UP and come through already! If you’re a regular, then you know what I’m talking about. For those of you too far away to join us this weekend, we put together this mixtape (featuring the 3 recent Chuck Wild remixes I posted here) to give you an idea of what we sound like live (the mix was actually recorded live to keep that authentic touch). Press play and jumpstart your weekend early!

Thanks Leftside! Whenever you get the babysitter, we’ll be here.

I don’t think the title of your article matches the content lol. Just kidding, mainly because I had some doubts after reading the article.

& It Was You Bootleg Remix

howtodresswell-cover

Another remix by yours truly! I swear this is the last one for a little while at least. Once again, I took a track that I was really feeling, but didn’t have a version that would fit into my dj sets, then added some boogie juice so that I could play it out. This one will be featured on the mixtape I’m wrapping up with my comrade in crime, Canyon Cody, to celebrate one year of our weekly Saturday night ‘Planet Rock’ party at The Virgil. If you are in the LA area, definitely swing through this weekend… it’s gonna get extra grimey! The mixtape should be done and posted by the end of the week, so stay tuned.

Lorde – Royals Bootleg Remix

lorde remix

Without further ado, I’d like to present my latest remix. The 16-year-old Kiwi pop sensation gets a touch of grime added to her big single for all my DJ’s and bass fiends out there. Kinda in line with the Banks remix I dropped a lil while back, this is a tune that I wanted to mix into my sets, but didn’t have a version with enough umpf (although the Lazerdisk take is nice on the slow funk tip). Mixed in some heavy 808’s and a touch of twerk to keep the kids bouncing. This is another one that will be featured on the upcoming Planet Rock Mixtape that I’m working on with Canyon Cody to celebrate one year of our weekly Saturday Night party at The Virgil. Press play and bump loudly.

  • Maria MARR

It’s crazy what we can do with music, definitely limitless freedom! I love the gospel sound of the backing vocals, it gives you goose bumps. This is definitely an amazing remix!
