All Hail The Flashing Lights

DiscoDieties

Been catching up on a ton of new music acquisitions, here’s a heaping handful of good ones that rose to the top of the pile. Focussing on some forward thinking outernational sounds today. From tropical NYC to Kenya to Panama via Oakland and beyond. I’m also getting very excited to make my Chicago debut this upcoming Saturday where I’ll be DJ-ing at the FEx party at Subterranean. Any of you in the Chi area, come through and say what’s up!

Rafi El :       Tra Ba (Rioux Remix) taken from this great new FREE EP on Dutty Artz records.

Owiny Sigoma Band :       Norbat Okelo this British/Kenyan group has hit a sweet spot in between rootsy folk & futuristic funk. More here.

Nairobi Matata Jazz :       Mapenzi Hayana Daktari (Frankie Francis Edit) the ever reliable Soundway records has put together a great collection of vintage East African gems, and a very tasty set of remixes & edits to accompany it.

Schlachthofbronx :       Apizaco these German global bass kingpins have a knack for nailing the simple banger. This one happens to be particularly sunny and just what I need right now.

DJ Quality :       Bacha Duro bachata trap. Someone had to do it, and I’m really glad it was quality. Check the EP on Bersa Discos.

Raka Dun :       No Tan Listo Los Rakas boys staying busy as always. This single comes with a fresh new video too.

La Mecanica Popular :       La Paz Del Freak sonido super psicoledico! Possibly the most tripped out salsa ever recorded, taken from this new 7″ on Names You Can Trust.

John Cameron :       Swamp Fever cream of the crop, vintage sound-library funk gets a proper reissue from Strut Records

Analog Players Society :       Korosi
from BK producer Amon, comes this new EP of Guinean soul meets steppers funk.

Wilde Belle :       June &       Love Like This this brother / sister indy duo have mixed a nice bit of roots reggae and afro flavor into their new release.

Unstoppable Swag

flash

I couldn’t be happier to finally be back home, and I’m itching to get busy on new music. In addition to travelling almost non-stop over the past month, I also moved into a new house. So there’s tons of settling in to do, and a new recording studio to finish building. Bottom line, it’s time for me to grind like a worker bee on adderall. As always, I’ll need a steady stream of funky shit to keep the inspiration flowing, and this place will always be here for me to share and spread the wealth. If you crave more flower-doily-tank-tops and fox-skin-on-gold-blazers (as pictured above), then I suggest you seek out this lost classic piece of literature.

Classixx :       Holding On (Jerome LOL Remix) mid-tempo 90’s house sound with some new jack swing to it. Definitely working for me.

Benny & Gain :       Been & Gone real nice flip of this disco boogie loop. Any sample spotters out there?

Mr President feat. Mr Day :       Love & Happiness punchy, funky, and highly danceable cover of this all-time classic

Daft Punk :       Get Lucky feat. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers Super forces of good music coming together like this on a single song is a rare treat. Very much excited to hear the whole album.

Bufi :       Take It & Feel It simple and effective, keeps the heads nodding

Justin Martin :       Don't Go one of my favorite house tunes in a minue! That hollow bass with the harp on top is just slaying

Benoit & Sergio :       $100 Bill late night sleezy house that I’m really not mad at

Haim :       Send Me Down (Kisses Remix) &       Falling (Psychemagik Remix) this group of sisters is making really cool songs right now, the originals are definitely worth seeking out as well

Alpine :       Gasoline shouts to my boo for turning me on to this one. Down-tempo indy-electro-pop burner

Toddla T Sound :       Worst Enemy soulful sounds from deep space nine. Loving this right now.

Lion Babe :       Treat Me Like Fire (Eunice & Mawkus Hotel Edit) nice simple edit that includes the OG sample with this new Badu-esque soul cut

Irie

IrieCrowd

Wow, this little Asia tour has finally come to a glorious end. I’m layover blogging at you from the Singapore airport, reminiscing on all the events that filled the past two weeks to the brim, making them feel more like two months. Last night was the über cherry on top. If you ever find yourself in Manila, Philippines, then don’t be a sucka and make sure you plan for a trip to Irie Sunday at B-Side. Easily one of the top 10 parties I’ve played at, and apparently it pops off like that every week. More pics of the insanity here (courtesy B-Side) and here (courtesy Brendan Goco). It’s a rare treat that I get to play an all reggae set, but as you can imagine, I had to push the boundaries a lickle bit. Some of these tunes here definitely got dropped, press play and keep spreading the vibes. HUGE shout to all my new homies who helped make the tour happen, made the parties pop off proper, and showed me the bomb places to eat: Andre, Eddie, Stefan, Sam, Kilowatt Sound, Dee Jae, Omar, Marcus, PJ, Artstrong… I SEE YOU!

Shabba Ranks & Michael Rose vs Dreadsquad      Shine Eye Gyal (Da Vibz Remaker Mash-Up) heaaaaavy!

Mr. Vegas :       Mus Come A Road modern day classic

Skarra Mucci      Movie Star (ft. Delroy Wilson) updated old-school classic

Dirty Dubsters      Girls Pon Mi Mind (ft. Top Cat) something for the steppers

Charly Black & J Capri :       Whine & Kotch specifically designed for dutty wine

Kess :       My Love ok, kinda cheesy, but I love it anyway

Major Lazer

      ”Watch

77klash & Jahdan Blakkamoore :       Brooklyn Anthem (Marcus Visionary Remix) for the city where my heart still lives

Stepart      Rainy City Blues (feat. Pupajim) from a French crew that keeps on killin it, but needs to get better mastering

Busy Signal :       Cool Baby (Poirier Remix) simple additional drums on this one make it that much more devastating

Big Wig & Beyond

BigWigFest

Coming at you live from the land of squeaky-clean sidewalks and bomb ass chili-crab! Spent the better part of this week getting to know the clubs, bars and insane futuristic architecture of this city/state known as Singapore. I initially came out here as part of the Big Wig Festival where I got to share the stage with some hip hop legends you may be familiar with (Pharoahe Monch & Pharcyde…) but then my hosts help put together a slew of pre-parties for me and my dude DJ Theory, so we’ve been spinning records every night since we arrived. Huge shout out to everyone involved in the festival (including the folks at Kult Magazine who designed the badass ‘hand of rock’ that presided over the whole event). I’m out to Kuala Lumpur today for a few, then headed to Manila, Philippines where the parties will pick back up later this week. If you’re out there check my schedule or follow the twitter feed for details… I’m always happy to link with people who love good music! And now as always, some TUNES.

Mélissa Laveaux :       Postman

Daniel Klauser :       Tocuaco (Melo Moombahton Edit)

MTR-Episode08

On the road once again, this time heading to Singapore! If you happen to be out there, hit me up. I’m doing dj sets all this week, including an appearance at the Big Wig Festival. Then the following week I’ll be doing a couple parties in Manila, Philippines. In the little pocket of down time I had at home, I managed to record this latest installment of MTR radio- 60mins chock full of tropical sunshine vibes and volcanic magma subfrequencies. The musical excursion begins with some chilled out reggae and smooth downtempo sounds, then picks up with some funky disco edits, a bit of soulful house, and finally closes with a couple tracks of atmospheric future funk. Featuring new tracks by Wild Belle, DJ iZem, Alpine, Laura Mvula, Moullinex, Ben Pearce, fLako and more. For the full tracklist and to download the show, check out BrooklynRadio.com
