Let’s Have Relations

Ralph Ziman

Brand new goodness coming from all angles right now. Get cozy and comfortable and let this fresh batch of tunes make sweet love to your aural canals. A little bit of head nod, touch of ass shake, and some deeper future soul sounds to keep your musical diet well rounded. Today’s visual inspiration comes courtesy of Ralph Ziman, who’s show “Ghosts” is up at the C.A.V.E. gallery in Venice right now (shouts to Nati Conrazon for the recommendation).

Gardens & Villa :       Bullet Train
so glad to hear a new album from this Santa Barbara group. Once again, my favorite cut from the album is a laid back, flute-laden groove with super catchy riffs and infectious falsetto hook.

St. Vincent :       Digital Witness
sharp edged, punchy horn pop with socially awkward lyrics is what this badass David Byrne protege does best.

Kenna :       Relations (ft. Childish Gambino)
haven’t heard a peep from Kenna in years, but he’s back swinging with this mid-tempo sleezy party starter that also sounds very Talking Heads influenced.

Estelle :       Maker Her Say (Beat It Up)
triumphant return of the reigning UK pop soulstress, going really crude and sexy on this one.

Jets ft. Jamie Lidell :       Midas Touch (Machinedrum Version)
it’s hard to be mad at this 80’s influenced, synthy house Midnight Star cover featuring one of my favorite whiteboy soul singers.

Justin Jay :       Le Voyou
this young LA based house producer is on a roll lately. Funky shit for the dancefloor right here.

Little Dragon :       Klapp Klapp
YES. Definitively. Can’t wait to hear the rest.

Jel :       Look Up
hard edged downtempo for late night driving or being a creep on the bus.

Phantogram :       Black Out Days
dark moody downtempo (ala Portishead) returns with a vengeance

Flume & Chet Faker :       Drop The Game &       What About Us
great collabo between some very promising talent on this EP

If you haven’t already, get on this. It’s a free 7 track EP on Soundcloud and she sounds like a combination of Laura Mvula and Anthony & The Johnsons. ‘Haters’ is my fav track but they’re all good.

As always, FANTASTIC set of tunes!

Luchando y Cantando

“Luchando y Cantando” = Captain Planet x Raggabund x Clan Urbano x Sarmiento

In preparation for my upcoming album “Esperanto Slang” which drops later this Spring, I’m giving away some freebies starting with this big intercontinental collaboration. South American brothers Raggabund (Paco Mendoza & Don Caramelo) + Peruvian hip hop crew Clan Urbano + Spanish rude bwoy Sarmiento, all gettin’ nice over a classic boom bap beat by yours truly- featuring horns from Brooklyn afrobeat band Zongo Junction. Global music, worldwide vibes…

Piece Of The Sky

micpic

Total mix of sounds for you this week. Some slightly older tunes I’ve only just discovered, as well as a few brand new future-classics (Disclosure with Mary J. Blige!?!). There’s some real mellow, soulful tracks and a few uptempo dancefloor fillers too. Don’t always try to make sense of the bouillabaisse, just press play and see if you agree that these are all worthy listens. The rad photo of a drive-in theater above was jacked from an instagram feed by Michael Goldberg that I follow and thoroughly enjoy. If you like faces that tell stories and stark landscapes, check him out.

Fredericks Brown :       What Lies Within &       Everywhere somehow I missed this release from my pals who played at a Mixtape Riot party way back…

AlunaGeorge :       Attracting Flies
still coming back to this album for inspiration

Sleigh Bells :       To Hell With You
interesting way of taking a semi-sweet melody and making it really hard. Definitely not mad at this.

Wayne Warshall ft. Assasin :       Stupid Money
undeniably catchy tune sung by a pack of 7 year old’s and 2 of Jamaica’s finest.

Pomo :       Work It Out
seriously funky swing on a soulful electro beat by this cat

Disclosure ft. Mary J Blige :       F For You
these brothers can do no wrong right now, and I hope Mary J gets the hint that this is exactly what she needs to keep doing!

Cosmo Baker & Grandtheft :
style crossing collabo  between 2 dj’s I very much respect. Something to please the disco heads and bass fiends alike.

Ibibio Sound Machine :       Let's Dance (Yak Inek Unek)
electro african dance music like this is something I rarely get enough of

Brenmar :       Medusa feat. Rush Davis
very much looking forward to the full album from this club killer

BADBADNOTGOOD :       Hedron
jazz meets trap? Yeah that’s what these young canucks are doing.

Guest DJ: Aaron Colbert

aaroncolber

I was lucky to meet Aaron Colbert pretty soon after I first made my way to LA. We swapped some music and traded a few DJ stories and I quickly realized this guy knows just about every club booker & lounge manager in town. He runs his own DJ booking company and does custom soundtracks for venues- basically most DJ’s dream job. He just finished up his latest mix for Maserati, so if you decide to test drive one of the new Ghibli’s or GranTurismo’s, you might be listening to his selections. I asked him to pick out a handful of his favorites from the mix and let us know a little about them. In his words: “Every track I selected has a touch of sexiness, power, and sophistication- giving you a sense of nighttime driving.”

Kate Boy :       The Way We Are (Bixel Boys Remix) Every remix these guys put out is genius!  I was honored to have them rock out in my DJ booth during the FORD Models event last year

Amine Edge & Dance :       Lost
I had been waiting for someone to make Frank Ocean’s amazing hip hop/soul track into something more club playable

Gorgon City Feat. MNEK :       Ready For Your Love By far my favorite House track of this year! I first discovered Gorgon City when my girl Yasmin sang on the track “Real”.  Very talented artist.

Ayer :       Circle Down (Keljet Mix) When I heard this track I had goosebumps.  That’s when you know it speaks to you.  100% Nudisco Vibe.

Tensnake Feat. Fiora :       See Right Through Tensnake’s new album is about to drop.  Watch out because from what I have heard, it’s going to be massive!  Soulful, beautiful, alive…

Lorde :       Team (Panic City Remix)
Panic City really killed this remix.  Lorde is definitely artist of the year.

I don’t think the title of your article matches the content lol. Just kidding, mainly because I had some doubts after reading the article.

Mixtape Riot Radio #011

episode11

After a long hiatus, I’m back with another 60min edition of MTR Radio, up now on BrooklynRadio.com. You won’t find any Grammy winners on the tracklist (oh wait, except for big winner NILE RODGERS!!!), but that definitely doesn’t mean this isn’t top tier material. Focusing mainly on favorites from 2013, as well as a few brand new goodies, this mix is a bit more on the mellow side than most previous ones, but it’s still far from sleepy. If you happen to be reeling in the aftermath of a polar vortex, let this be your soundtrack as you dethaw with a hot beverage, while lying on a sheep skin rug by the fire. Featuring music from Disclosure, Mayer Hawthorne, Big Data, The Internet, Jungle, Zero 7, Quantic and more.

It Is What It Is

boggin

I’m getting my full dose of winter realness this week, visiting my fam back on the farm in rural New Hampshire. Call me crazy, but living in season-less Los Angeles for the past 3 years, I’ve come to really appreciate whatever bits of snow & cold I can get. After the snowboarding, x-country skiing, late night barn-raving & toboggan rides down suicide hill, hibernation mode kicked in full effect. I needed a chilled out soundtrack for sipping joe by the woodstove while my long johns dried out, and thus, this week’s playlist was born. Some new tunes, but some older ones that fit the vibe as well.

Tennis :       Mean Streets
shout out to the one and only Shrimp Scampi for introducing me to these guys

Stereolab :       Infinity Girl
I remember cool musician kids in my high school playing this album, and if I wasn’t so obsessed with Outkast & The Roots, I might have been able to appreciate this one a lot earlier. Better late than never.

Romanowski :       I Thought Our Love Was Strong (Bing Ji Ling Remix)
I’m pretty sure it was Canyon Cody who gave me this… keep coming back to it and loving it everytime. More from the mad genius Romanowski here.

Blood Orange :       Uncle Ace &       It Is What It Is
apparently Dev Hynes hears in colors, I’m not sure if I’m entirely convinced this is a real condition, but it’s certainly working for him.

Alpine :       Villages
I’ve shared music from this group before, but now their full album is out, so check it.

Metronomy :       I'm Aquarius
very nice newbie from this group with an awesome retro-futuristic space video to accompany it.

Mo Kolours :       Mike Black
happy to hear a new single, and news of an upcoming full-length, from this lo-fi future rootsman

Charles Bradley :       Strictly Reserved For You &       Where Do We Go From Here
backed by the incomparable Menahan Street Band, Charles Bradley keeps on killing it.

Devendra Banhart :       Für Hildegard von Bingen
this one puts me in an emotional montage sequence from an 80’s movie, and I don’t mind one bit.

Screw & The Cancel :       No More
slinky moody beats always go nice with frostbitten fingers. More of ’em here.

Rainy Milo :       Deal Me Briefly
rounding it off with some icy UK R&B from this girl
