Any Way You Wanna

JayAdams

HUGE heaps of appreciation to all my friends & fam who made it out to The Virgil on Saturday for a truly epic Planet Rock anniversary bash (and especially to DJ Cato who surprised us with a customized chocolate cake). I felt like taking it back to some old-school soulful, funky sounds this week, so here’s a few gems I’ve been saving up in that department- plus some newbies that are pushing that spirit solidly into the future.

Harold Butler :       Do It Anyday
vintage stepper’s reggae take on a disco classic

William De Vaughn :       Be Thankful For What You Got (FKJ Remix)
this laid back low-rider staple just got a nice kick in the ass from upcoming funkster FKJ

Kerrier District :       Illogan
I had forgotten about this record produced by Luke Vibert in ’04, almost ten years old but still sounding fresh to me

The Temptations :       Papa Was Rollin' Stoned (DiscoTech Re-Edit)
another nice flip of a soul classic, this one from a soulful Swede

Donny Hathaway :       The Ghetto (Dmitri From Paris Inna Disco)
Dimitry excels in that subtle touch magic, giving new dancefloor life to one of my all-time favorites

John Newman :       Love Me Again
this one is probably old news to any Brits reading, but is brand new to me. Gotta give young Mr. Newman props for paying homage to the Northern Soul dance scene in the video too.

Jagwar Ma :       Come Save Me (Flight Facilities Graceland Remix)
I already knew FF were took inspiration from Paul Simon when they released their dubby edit of “You Can Call Me Al”, but this remix just takes that Graceland love to a whole new level.

Moon Boots :       Love Strong
this guy just keeps on hitting homeruns

Tiny Hearts :       Snow Cold &       Centerfold
new electro-soul-pop project from Wajeed & peoples, check it out

Starship Connection :       We Can Go All Night
my dude Teeko has a funk band, and they curated a sick compilation on Brooklyn’s best record label, and you should do yourself a favor and GET IT NOW!

The Internet :       Partners In Crime
on repeated listens, this is quickly becoming one of my favorite albums of the year.

Planet Rock 1 Year Anniversary

pr-oneyear

Hard to believe it’s been a full year of rocking Saturday nights with my DJ partner in crime Canyon Cody. Our lil baby Planet Rock has grown to be one of the most raucous and consistently bumping parties on the East side of LA (or the whole city for that matter). We may have a reputation as a destination for twerkers, but there’s plenty of music snobs and old school heads in the crowd as well. We always work to keep the mixes creative, while remaining devoted to the art of moving butts. If you’re in the LA area and have been snoozing, WAKE UP and come through already! If you’re a regular, then you know what I’m talking about. For those of you too far away to join us this weekend, we put together this mixtape (featuring the 3 recent Chuck Wild remixes I posted here) to give you an idea of what we sound like live (the mix was actually recorded live to keep that authentic touch). Press play and jumpstart your weekend early!

& It Was You Bootleg Remix

howtodresswell-cover

Another remix by yours truly! I swear this is the last one for a little while at least. Once again, I took a track that I was really feeling, but didn’t have a version that would fit into my dj sets, then added some boogie juice so that I could play it out. This one will be featured on the mixtape I’m wrapping up with my comrade in crime, Canyon Cody, to celebrate one year of our weekly Saturday night ‘Planet Rock’ party at The Virgil. If you are in the LA area, definitely swing through this weekend… it’s gonna get extra grimey! The mixtape should be done and posted by the end of the week, so stay tuned.

Tounkan Remix

tounkan-rmx-cover

Been patiently waiting to release this one on the public, and the day has finally arrived! This is an official remix I did for Stronghold Sound – a DJ/producer crew/record label based out of San Francisco, Beirut & Conakry (Guinea, West Africa). The original recording was part of a collection of Guinean folk recordings made by the Stronghold crew, featuring singer ‘Sara’. This remix is now available on 7″ vinyl along with remixes from J-Boogie, Chief Boima + Ciku, and Dub Snakkr. Any purchase of 7″ gets you access to the MP3 download. West African folk meets electro-disco future-funk… aka Good Music. Go get it here.

  • Dawn

I am so, so, so stoked to have discovered you. I have loved African music since 18 – fell in love with a man who was a fanatic collector. When we parted (heartbreak) he kept the collection (irreplaceable vynil collected from all over Africa by motorbike)… but I still have the love and now at 42 it seems even bigger. It is an inexplicable spell and I see that you have it.. Thank you for introducing me to Uproot Andy. Where can I listen to the stuff you did Thomas Mapfumo? (Saw him live!)

  • Chuck Wild

Thanks Dawn, I do share the bug indeed. The collabo with Mapfumo will be on my next album… working on it now! Stay tuned.

The Only Thing That’s Real

eclipse

Just brought a new bundle of joy into my life in the form of a 5-month old puppy. Been a pretty busy week of dog treats, pet shops, rabies vaccines, and chew toys, but it’s all more than worth it to have this lil guy smiling and prancing around in the backyard. Lots of new tunes this week, but I think the Aloe Blacc / Pharrell collabo sums up most accurately where I’m at. Love is a real thing, that much I know. More of a mellow, late night, moody playlist overall this week, but it could also be a very appropriate soundtrack to lovemaking… so have fun.

Aloe Blacc :       Love Is The Answer collabo with the perpetually funky Pharrell from his new EP (Avicii smash notably absent).

Victor Démé :       Djon Maya (Synapson Remix) mid-tempo soulful french folk house. Check more of his work here.

Sango ft. SPZRKT :       Middle Of Things (J Boogie Edit) Sango been killin lately, but my homie J Boogie just took this tune right into the pocket.

Phenomenal Handclap Band :       The Written Word (Dee & Kenan's TBA Remix) nice psyched out head nod version from this NYC crew

John Wizards :       Lusaka By Night South African lo-fi trippiness gets a double thumbs up from me

MØ Ft. Diplo :       XXX 88 interesting foray into triumphant dark pop hop. Kinda sounds like a mix of Santigold & Lykke Li over a trap beat. Not mad at this.

Autre Ne Veut :       Counting pretty out there, hazy white-boy crooning over jittery electronic beats

Banks :       This Is What It Feels Like loving everything I hear from this girl right now, especially this one produced by Jamie Woon.

London Grammar :       Stay Awake &       High Life discovered this group on the Disclosure album, can’t say I’m crazy about their whole debut album, but these tunes an a few others are definitely doin it for me.

Dirg Gerner :       Before It's Over &       Got Your Back more soulful slinky beat insanity from the highly reliable Eglo label.

Myron & E :       I Can't Let You Get Away new retro soul duo on the Stonesthrow label comes super correct on this one which I discovered when they played it live on KCRW

Lorde – Royals Bootleg Remix

lorde remix

Without further ado, I’d like to present my latest remix. The 16-year-old Kiwi pop sensation gets a touch of grime added to her big single for all my DJ’s and bass fiends out there. Kinda in line with the Banks remix I dropped a lil while back, this is a tune that I wanted to mix into my sets, but didn’t have a version with enough umpf (although the Lazerdisk take is nice on the slow funk tip). Mixed in some heavy 808’s and a touch of twerk to keep the kids bouncing. This is another one that will be featured on the upcoming Planet Rock Mixtape that I’m working on with Canyon Cody to celebrate one year of our weekly Saturday Night party at The Virgil. Press play and bump loudly.

  • Maria MARR

It’s crazy what we can do with music, definitely limitless freedom! I love the gospel sound of the backing vocals, it gives you goose bumps. This is definitely an amazing remix!
