One For Japan

I’ve been seeing a bunch of artists sell music to help the earthquake/tsunami relief, so I got inspired to do the same. I pulled out an old Japanese LP I’d been meaning to sample for a long time, and did just that. CHECK OUT THE SONG HERE and buy the download if you dig it. I’m asking for a minimum of $1 (all proceeds go to the Red Cross earthquake/tsunami relief effort). If you don’t dig it, find another excuse to donate anyway.

I Got Love for Nate Dogg

RIP to the late great NATE DOGG. So many hooks, so many classics, a true OG. I know some may think it sacrilegious to even attempt remixing this man, but I felt the need to pay homage in my own way. I remember the first time I heard this song blasting from my friend’s newly-installed subwoofer-equipped car system (paid for with drug money, mind you). The man could make even a skinny white boy in the woods feel slightly gangster, and for that I thank him.

Gordon Voidwell – Ivy League Circus Remix

I’ve been pumping out music lately, but neglecting to share it. This is a problem I am about to fix. Along with the regular stream of cool music I’m always pulling from the ether and posting here, expect more exclusive remixes and originals in the next few…

Some of you may remember Gordon Voidwell. He did a Mixtape Riot! party in NYC with us back in Summer ’09. He’s cool as shit and is now getting written up in all the popular publications, set to blow the fuck up. His hipster-disco, synth-pop hit “Ivy League Circus” get’s a nitrous-oxide injection for the dancefloor by yours truly. Looking forward to more from this dude in the near future.

p.s.- you can download the track by pressing the little downward pointed arrow

Biggie Day

Today is officially RIP Biggie day. Can’t believe he was killed when he was just 25. In honor of one of the best rappers to ever bless a mic, Shepdog’s classic Roots Manuva mashup came to mind. Since I was posting that, I figured why not share another nice Shepdog mash. And then, since I was on a mashup roll, I thought of another Biggie related remix done by our very own Murphy’s Law back when we were doing the Captain’s Crate blog.  I would’ve taken some time to put together a new one for you all, but unfortunately the power has been out all day on my block and I’m posting this from my friend’s couch. Maybe next year…

haha nice! Definitely no copyright on that. glad to hear the gumbo funk is still spreading.

I have read your article carefully and I agree with you very much. This has provided a great help for my thesis writing, and I will seriously improve it. However, I don’t know much about a certain place. Can you help me?

Acceptable In The 80’s

It’s not news to anyone that the 80’s are being re-lived to the fullest. Every synth-soaked decible, every acid washed iota, and all the glory of the vocoder- undeniable and omnipresent once again, today. As an 80’s baby, who suckled upon these very phenomena, I’m not mad. I leave you all today with some of the freshest specimens of said cultural experiment.

Toro Y Moi :       New Beat
ok, so technically this could maybe be ’79, but any reputable roller disco would be rocking this well into ’83

Jazmine Sullivan :       Don't Make Me Wait
her new EP travels from Prince-style production like this, to the very Mary J. Blige influenced “Holding You Down”, and into some reggae infused newer sounds- simply put, a winner!

Architecture In Helsinki :       Contact High
at first I thought they sampled Midnight Star’s “Midas Touch”, but no, they just love that band as much as me

Private :       My Secret Lover
this one from Denmark is 4 years old, but new to me, and damn if it ain’t funky enough to make Evelyn “Champagne” King jealous.

Blacktop :       Reversed (Opolopo Remix)
don’t know anything about Blacktop or Opolopo, but this one’s a scorcher

DJ Apt One :       Show Me What You Got
one of the funky masterminds behind DollarBinJams.com and the Young Robots label. Get more music from this man for free on his websites and cop his single here

Clive Tanaka y Su Orquesta :       All Night &       The Fourth Magi
this one is a little less obviously 80’s, but I just discovered this guy and figured it fit enough and was too good not to share.

One For Egypt

Revolution is in the air. I can’t help but feel inspired. I don’t have a ton of Egyptian or Middle-Eastern music, but I do have a few gems worth sharing. Recent events have also inspired me to knock out a simple disco edit of a Lebanese favorite of mine by Fairouz. I remember first hearing “Albostah” or “El-Bosta” (depending on translation) at my favorite NYC falafel spot and having the kebob-master write down the song name for me on a grease-stained napkin. Here’s to the dream of better days to come and in support of the peaceful struggles that continue throughout the Mid-East!

Fairouz :       Albostah (Captain Planet Disco Edit)
bellydance meets Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards

Salah Ragab & the Cairo Jazz Band :       Egypt Strut &       Neveen
this guy worked with Sun-Ra among others. Check out this whole album for more

Hossam Ramzy :       Khusara Khusara &       Wana Be-ied Annak
sound familiar? Jay-Z is clearly a fan

Hyam Younes :       Jeitili
from an amazing 7″ I found years ago
