In The Gray

In The Gray

Perfectly timed for all your Summer BBQ & pool party soundtracks, this second single from my upcoming Captain Planet album has arrived, ready to mash up a dancefloor near you- or at least keep your head nodding while you fan yourself and try to keep cool. I originally made this riddim (featuring horns by The Lions) for a Katy B remix which got a lot of love, but was passed on by the label so I could never officially release it- wack. Because no good riddim should ever go to waste, I enlisted the talents of my good friend and frequent collaborator Brit Laurén. She killed it so thoroughly I’ve already forgotten what Katy sounded like. In The Gray is out now on 7″ (I see you vinyl heads!!!) and digitally courtesy of Bastard Jazz Records, GET IT HERE. Huge shout out to the ever-reliable OkayAfrica blog for premiering the song yesterday and giving it a great review. And stay tuned, the full album Esperanto Slang drops in September…

Pun Pun Catalu Remix

FaniaCover

Merengue-meets-trap craziness cooked up by me and my homie Canyon Cody (Subsuelo mastermind and Planet Rock cohort). Canyon also works at Nacional records and helps organize the LAMC in NYC, which is where he met the current owner of the legendary Fania Records. It is thanks to him that I had the honor of getting access to some original multi-track tapes from this late-70’s session with La Reina Celia Cruz and the gangster trombonist extraordinaire Willie Colon. While this wouldn’t have been my first choice of songs to remix from their massive catalogue, it did lend itself quite nicely for a half-time heavy-bottom flip up, which is something that Canyon & I like to play a lot of at our weekly Saturday night get down. Press play and be ready for a quick dose of sonic adrenaline. Also, big shout out to SPIN.com for premiering it yesterday!

Un Poquito Más

PoquitoMas

I’ve been anxiously awaiting the day when I could share this one with you all. I’ve been a huge fan of Marcos Garcia (aka Chico Mann) since I first saw Antibalas back in Brooklyn circa 2003. When he dropped his first Manifest Tone EP I had him come by for an interview and guest DJ set on my Passport radio show on WNYU. I probably have a recording of that somewhere and I need to dig it up… Anyway, jump ahead many years and I finally got close to a proper collabo with my remix of his single “I Feel It”. I started sending him beats hoping that one of them would catch his interest, and sure enough it finally worked. “Un Poquito Más” is the first single from my upcoming full-length on Bastard Jazz Records, with melodic marimba vibes, heavy bass, cracking drums and suave vocals by Chico, I hope you agree it’s a winner. If you dig it, please support and spread the word! Big shout out to the Vice blog Thump for the premier and positive (albeit heavily misspelled) review.

Endless Carnival Mix

stunmomix

A little while back, a group of Bay Area sunglasses enthusiasts reached out to me about making a mixtape for their collective. They call themselves Stunner Of The Month, and basically they provide crazy shades to thousands of subscribers on a monthly basis, always accompanied by a fresh mixtape. If that sounds appealing to you, check em out. Because it was the week of Carnival, and Mardi Gras,  and a million other historically related parties around the world, I decided to make a mix to help keep everyone shaking long after Fat Tuesday. The tracklist is heavy on tropical vibes from equatorial locations where stunner shades are a must. There’s plenty of reggae and dancehall selections, but also a taste of Brazil, Trinidad, Panama, Dominican Republic, Ghana, Colombia, Angola and a few other places where people like spicy food. The mix peppers in a few Captain Planet remixes and finishes off with a brand new unreleased original tune that will be on my upcoming album “Esperanto Slang” which drops later this Spring on Bastard Jazz.

Ka Kong Remix

kakong

BIG TUNE! I was very happy when my friend Thornato (co-founder of Cumba Mela Records and all-around good dude) hit me up about remixing this song. His original version, featuring ragga vocalist Jahdan, is a massive 3ball influenced rootsy global bass monster. I wanted to take it down to half speed with some reggae roots, but also keep it hype for the club, so I mixed in a bit from both worlds and voila! Press play and bump loudly- apologies in advance if your speakers blow out. Big shout out to my man DJ Theory & LargeUp.com for featuring the premier. And please, if you’re feelin it, support by purchasing the full release here.
