Jamaica Has A Bobsled Team

runnings

What better time to take a Caribbean vacation than the middle of January? While blizzards and sub-zero temperatures sweep half the country, I know all my East Coast friends and fam are doing their best to keep from freezing their keisters off. Consider this post my offering to those who can’t afford the time off work, or plane ticket to Jamaica- a nice heavy heap of dancehall, reggae, soca and other sun-soaked sounds that can (at least mentally) help you feel closer to the equator. One time for anyone out there who also had the Cool Runnings soundtrack on cassette tape as a kid!

P-Money & Gappy Ranks :       Baddest

QQ :       One Drop very heavy Major Lazer production

Uproot Andy :       Worldwide Dembow ft. Pablo Piddy another winner from Señor Andy, taken from a great new collection celebrating 6 years of Dutty Artz

The Rub :       Dutty Gyal ft. Natalie Storm (Smalltown DJ's Remix) heavy moombah remix by this highly reputable Canadian DJ crew

Wax Wreckaz :       High Grade ft. Million Stylez

Machel Montano :       Doh Mind the reigning Soca king hits again

Marcus Visionary :       St Vincent deep, electronic Soca sounds from this D&B producer/DJ

Self Help :       Get Bent the homie from the mid-west comes correct on this cuica-trap banger

M.I.A. :       Double Bubble Trouble going haaaaard on this reggae-trap monster

Konshens :       Rasta Imposter (Remix ft. Tarrus Riley all-star line-up, gotta love the phone call in the middle…

Lady :       Get Ready (Ticklah Remix) new classic from the always on-point Ticklah. Get your mitt’s on the 7″ here.

Andre Tanker :       River Come Down and a rare vintage Trini-funk gem that took me waaaaay too long to hunt down (after hearing it on Brooklyn pirate radio back in 2005)

Attack Of The Giant Baby

newborn

Happy New Year! Sorry for the delay in posts, I’ve been extremely busy enjoying my vacation. After a quick jaunt to Hawaii followed by a long string of gatherings with fam & friends, I’m finally getting back to work. Didn’t get a chance to make a proper “best of”, but I’m thinking my next episode of MTR Radio will be an attempt at that (long overdue, I know). Today’s tunes go from mellow to hype and back again, nothing particularly relevant to the start of 2014- just some things I’ve been listening to the past couple of weeks. Press play and meditate on those resolutions you made, before the baby gets grown and overtakes us all.

Fink :       Maker (Synapson Remix)

Equal :       Lost In The Evening (Follow Me Remix)

Bit Funk :       Soul Satisfaction

Funky Fat & Digitaria :       You Bring Me Down

Bastard Jazz // 2013

BJ-2013

While I haven’t had a chance to put together my own personal “best of” for the year, my brethren at Bastard Jazz Records have made an excellent mix composed entirely of their releases from this year- plus a few snippets of unreleased material (including something from my upcoming Capt. Planet album). Starting off with some top-notch downtempo and future funk, the mix picks up and travels into some Caribbean and Afro styles, classic disco, and a touch of house as well. It’s impressive to see how much great material they’re putting out, and I’m happy to be a part of the Bastard familia alongside heads like Lord Echo, Potatohead People, Sol Power All-Stars, Starship Connection, Colm K and more. Props to my homies DJ DRM & Erik The Red! Check out the soundcloud page for a full tracklist and links to buy individual tracks.

Tis The Season

gingerbread-thug

In my ongoing effort not to perpetuate mindless obedience to mass-marketing and gluttonous consumer hysteria, I will once again urge all my friends to make me mixtapes rather than buy me a new set of congas, or that really fresh button up from 10deep, or a set of platinum rims for my Honda Fit (although I won’t be mad if you guys DO end up getting me those things). On second thought, I have too much music already. Dear Santa, GET ME A GOLD CHAIN!

Disclosure x Nile Rodgers x Sam Smith x Jimmy Napes :       Together
holy hell yes! Do I even need to say anything after you read the line-up?

DJ Vadim :       Black Is The Night ft. Katherin Deboer oldie but goodie, mellow reggae/hip hop vibes

Ash Reynolds :       Don't Want To Let You Go
nice mid-tempo laid back disco edit taken from this new EP on Cloak Dagger’s new label

Mayer Hawthorne :       Wine Glass Woman
teaming up with Pharrell on this one, and you can hear it in the undeniable catchyness of the hook

Hubbabubbaklubb :       Mopedbart
Norwegians rarely sound this funky. Don’t know what he’s singing about, but I can’t help but smile every time he says “fart”. Can someone Scandinavian please tell me what that means??? More from these guys here.

Dena :       Cash
I like how this girl is doing her own thing. Nice bouncy remix makes it dancefloor worthy.

TJ Swann :       And You Know That
old school disco 12″ rarity in the mix just because

Body Language :       Just Because &       Lose My Head
funky electro pop from this Brooklyn group

Franz Ferdinand :       Right Action (Liv Spencer Rework)
exactly the kind of rocker-disco that pleases the skinny pants kids and funk heads alike, bravo.

Fitz & The Tantrums :       The Walker &       Out Of My League
big classic hooks are taking this local band to the next level of popdom and I ain’t mad. Kinda reminds me of some Matt & Kim

La Grande Bellezza

I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving with multiple food comas and extended afternoon naps. I’m gradually coming down from a week-long gratitude high myself, still feeling full and a few pounds heavier. Not a lot of time today since I’m jumping right back into work, but you know I can’t go too long without feeding the fiends in need. Some nice recent musical discoveries for you, old and new: something funky, something punky, and a little grit for good measure. If you’re like me and are constantly looking for hand-knit onesies, then you’ll probably dig checking out more pics by Phyllis Galembo, like the one above.

Mapei :       Don't Wait

Long Distance Listening

dasic-overpass
I’m forever in love with watching ideas, images and sounds travel huge leaps in time & space, often far beyond their creator’s imagined reach. Could William Onyeabor possibly have pictured that thousands of people outside Nigeria would be playing his lo-fi, one-man-band synthesizer disco tunes, 40 years after he released them? Maybe, but probably not. With that in mind, I’ve been trying to imagine where listeners will be when they play the new music I’m making. I get pretty excited at the prospect of having one of my songs dropped at a rave on the moon (or even Mars) in the year 2056. I feel like we’ll be partying in low gravity as soon as it’s more economically plausible. A lot can happen in 40 years, and when it does go down, remember who told you about it first, and look for my old ass on the dancefloor. Finally, if you think that overpass artwork is as fresh as I do, check out more on Dasic here.

The Venus Flytrap Collective :       PSILO
showing some solidarity with my people in The Philippines… this soulful gem comes courtesy of Ms. Badkiss (been sitting on it waaay too long). Luckily she, and my other friends in Manila are all fine, but do the right thing and support those in need if you can. More from V.F.C. (out of Manila) right here.

Débruit & Alsarah :       Alkoan Baladi
sick collaboration and fusion of styles on this project. Another collabo between myself and Alsarah is in the works…

Karol Conka :       Boa Noite
hit you in the face type bass from this up n coming Brazilian badass. Shouts to DJ Cato for putting me on to it.

Red Fox & Cocotaxi :       Hot Like Fiya (Deejay Theory Remix)
another sureshot from my homie in the Bay.

Stas :       Panama Accordion
big beat inna South American street market stylee. Thanks for DJ Gozar for this one.

Quantic & Nidia Gongora :       Muevelo Negro
cotdaaaaamn! This latest release from Señor Quantico blends sub-woofer bass synths and folkloric marimbas beautifully. Powerful vocals from Nidia take this one over the top to classic status. Just may have to remix this one…

DJ Subversivo :       Las Olas de la Mar (Subversivo Remix)
another nice one gleaned from the crates of Gozar. Check the full free ep here.

William Onyeabor :       Good Name (Joakim Remix)
Now I may have known about this guy for a loooong time (since finding a vinyl copy of “Atomic Bomb” in the Ivory Coast at age 19!) but I’m very happy that Luaka Bop is helping spread the long overdue gospel.

Lord Echo :       Digital Haircut
the Kiwi afro-disco-dub specialist returns with a vengeance! So happy for my dudes at Bastard Jazz, this whole release is TOP NOTCH. The vocals on “Moten Lava” just slay me. Do yourself a favor and get this record!

Djavan :       Nereci
and who’s gonna complain about a little vintage Brazilian funk nugget to round out the set?
