It Is What It Is

boggin

I’m getting my full dose of winter realness this week, visiting my fam back on the farm in rural New Hampshire. Call me crazy, but living in season-less Los Angeles for the past 3 years, I’ve come to really appreciate whatever bits of snow & cold I can get. After the snowboarding, x-country skiing, late night barn-raving & toboggan rides down suicide hill, hibernation mode kicked in full effect. I needed a chilled out soundtrack for sipping joe by the woodstove while my long johns dried out, and thus, this week’s playlist was born. Some new tunes, but some older ones that fit the vibe as well.

Tennis :       Mean Streets
shout out to the one and only Shrimp Scampi for introducing me to these guys

Stereolab :       Infinity Girl
I remember cool musician kids in my high school playing this album, and if I wasn’t so obsessed with Outkast & The Roots, I might have been able to appreciate this one a lot earlier. Better late than never.

Romanowski :       I Thought Our Love Was Strong (Bing Ji Ling Remix)
I’m pretty sure it was Canyon Cody who gave me this… keep coming back to it and loving it everytime. More from the mad genius Romanowski here.

Blood Orange :       Uncle Ace &       It Is What It Is
apparently Dev Hynes hears in colors, I’m not sure if I’m entirely convinced this is a real condition, but it’s certainly working for him.

Alpine :       Villages
I’ve shared music from this group before, but now their full album is out, so check it.

Metronomy :       I'm Aquarius
very nice newbie from this group with an awesome retro-futuristic space video to accompany it.

Mo Kolours :       Mike Black
happy to hear a new single, and news of an upcoming full-length, from this lo-fi future rootsman

Charles Bradley :       Strictly Reserved For You &       Where Do We Go From Here
backed by the incomparable Menahan Street Band, Charles Bradley keeps on killing it.

Devendra Banhart :       Für Hildegard von Bingen
this one puts me in an emotional montage sequence from an 80’s movie, and I don’t mind one bit.

Screw & The Cancel :       No More
slinky moody beats always go nice with frostbitten fingers. More of ’em here.

Rainy Milo :       Deal Me Briefly
rounding it off with some icy UK R&B from this girl

Ka Kong Remix

kakong

BIG TUNE! I was very happy when my friend Thornato (co-founder of Cumba Mela Records and all-around good dude) hit me up about remixing this song. His original version, featuring ragga vocalist Jahdan, is a massive 3ball influenced rootsy global bass monster. I wanted to take it down to half speed with some reggae roots, but also keep it hype for the club, so I mixed in a bit from both worlds and voila! Press play and bump loudly- apologies in advance if your speakers blow out. Big shout out to my man DJ Theory & LargeUp.com for featuring the premier. And please, if you’re feelin it, support by purchasing the full release here.

Jamaica Has A Bobsled Team

runnings

What better time to take a Caribbean vacation than the middle of January? While blizzards and sub-zero temperatures sweep half the country, I know all my East Coast friends and fam are doing their best to keep from freezing their keisters off. Consider this post my offering to those who can’t afford the time off work, or plane ticket to Jamaica- a nice heavy heap of dancehall, reggae, soca and other sun-soaked sounds that can (at least mentally) help you feel closer to the equator. One time for anyone out there who also had the Cool Runnings soundtrack on cassette tape as a kid!

P-Money & Gappy Ranks :       Baddest

QQ :       One Drop very heavy Major Lazer production

Uproot Andy :       Worldwide Dembow ft. Pablo Piddy another winner from Señor Andy, taken from a great new collection celebrating 6 years of Dutty Artz

The Rub :       Dutty Gyal ft. Natalie Storm (Smalltown DJ's Remix) heavy moombah remix by this highly reputable Canadian DJ crew

Wax Wreckaz :       High Grade ft. Million Stylez

Machel Montano :       Doh Mind the reigning Soca king hits again

Marcus Visionary :       St Vincent deep, electronic Soca sounds from this D&B producer/DJ

Self Help :       Get Bent the homie from the mid-west comes correct on this cuica-trap banger

M.I.A. :       Double Bubble Trouble going haaaaard on this reggae-trap monster

Konshens :       Rasta Imposter (Remix ft. Tarrus Riley all-star line-up, gotta love the phone call in the middle…

Lady :       Get Ready (Ticklah Remix) new classic from the always on-point Ticklah. Get your mitt’s on the 7″ here.

Andre Tanker :       River Come Down and a rare vintage Trini-funk gem that took me waaaaay too long to hunt down (after hearing it on Brooklyn pirate radio back in 2005)

Attack Of The Giant Baby

newborn

Happy New Year! Sorry for the delay in posts, I’ve been extremely busy enjoying my vacation. After a quick jaunt to Hawaii followed by a long string of gatherings with fam & friends, I’m finally getting back to work. Didn’t get a chance to make a proper “best of”, but I’m thinking my next episode of MTR Radio will be an attempt at that (long overdue, I know). Today’s tunes go from mellow to hype and back again, nothing particularly relevant to the start of 2014- just some things I’ve been listening to the past couple of weeks. Press play and meditate on those resolutions you made, before the baby gets grown and overtakes us all.

Fink :       Maker (Synapson Remix)

Equal :       Lost In The Evening (Follow Me Remix)

Bit Funk :       Soul Satisfaction

Funky Fat & Digitaria :       You Bring Me Down

Gigamesh :       Enjoy

Tensnake :       No Relief ft. Fiora

Mapei :       Don't Wait (Smalltown DJ's Edit)

Mayer Hawthorne :       Crime ft. Kendrick Lamar

Island Fox :       Primary Colours

Kelela :       Bank Head &       Keep It Cool

Bastard Jazz // 2013

BJ-2013

While I haven’t had a chance to put together my own personal “best of” for the year, my brethren at Bastard Jazz Records have made an excellent mix composed entirely of their releases from this year- plus a few snippets of unreleased material (including something from my upcoming Capt. Planet album). Starting off with some top-notch downtempo and future funk, the mix picks up and travels into some Caribbean and Afro styles, classic disco, and a touch of house as well. It’s impressive to see how much great material they’re putting out, and I’m happy to be a part of the Bastard familia alongside heads like Lord Echo, Potatohead People, Sol Power All-Stars, Starship Connection, Colm K and more. Props to my homies DJ DRM & Erik The Red! Check out the soundcloud page for a full tracklist and links to buy individual tracks.

Tis The Season

gingerbread-thug

In my ongoing effort not to perpetuate mindless obedience to mass-marketing and gluttonous consumer hysteria, I will once again urge all my friends to make me mixtapes rather than buy me a new set of congas, or that really fresh button up from 10deep, or a set of platinum rims for my Honda Fit (although I won’t be mad if you guys DO end up getting me those things). On second thought, I have too much music already. Dear Santa, GET ME A GOLD CHAIN!

Disclosure x Nile Rodgers x Sam Smith x Jimmy Napes :       Together
holy hell yes! Do I even need to say anything after you read the line-up?

DJ Vadim :       Black Is The Night ft. Katherin Deboer oldie but goodie, mellow reggae/hip hop vibes

Ash Reynolds :       Don't Want To Let You Go
nice mid-tempo laid back disco edit taken from this new EP on Cloak Dagger’s new label

Mayer Hawthorne :       Wine Glass Woman
teaming up with Pharrell on this one, and you can hear it in the undeniable catchyness of the hook

Hubbabubbaklubb :       Mopedbart
Norwegians rarely sound this funky. Don’t know what he’s singing about, but I can’t help but smile every time he says “fart”. Can someone Scandinavian please tell me what that means??? More from these guys here.

Dena :       Cash
I like how this girl is doing her own thing. Nice bouncy remix makes it dancefloor worthy.

TJ Swann :       And You Know That
old school disco 12″ rarity in the mix just because

Body Language :       Just Because &       Lose My Head
funky electro pop from this Brooklyn group

Franz Ferdinand :       Right Action (Liv Spencer Rework)
exactly the kind of rocker-disco that pleases the skinny pants kids and funk heads alike, bravo.

Fitz & The Tantrums :       The Walker &       Out Of My League
big classic hooks are taking this local band to the next level of popdom and I ain’t mad. Kinda reminds me of some Matt & Kim
