Long Distance Listening

dasic-overpass
I’m forever in love with watching ideas, images and sounds travel huge leaps in time & space, often far beyond their creator’s imagined reach. Could William Onyeabor possibly have pictured that thousands of people outside Nigeria would be playing his lo-fi, one-man-band synthesizer disco tunes, 40 years after he released them? Maybe, but probably not. With that in mind, I’ve been trying to imagine where listeners will be when they play the new music I’m making. I get pretty excited at the prospect of having one of my songs dropped at a rave on the moon (or even Mars) in the year 2056. I feel like we’ll be partying in low gravity as soon as it’s more economically plausible. A lot can happen in 40 years, and when it does go down, remember who told you about it first, and look for my old ass on the dancefloor. Finally, if you think that overpass artwork is as fresh as I do, check out more on Dasic here.

The Venus Flytrap Collective :       PSILO
showing some solidarity with my people in The Philippines… this soulful gem comes courtesy of Ms. Badkiss (been sitting on it waaay too long). Luckily she, and my other friends in Manila are all fine, but do the right thing and support those in need if you can. More from V.F.C. (out of Manila) right here.

Débruit & Alsarah :       Alkoan Baladi
sick collaboration and fusion of styles on this project. Another collabo between myself and Alsarah is in the works…

Karol Conka :       Boa Noite
hit you in the face type bass from this up n coming Brazilian badass. Shouts to DJ Cato for putting me on to it.

Red Fox & Cocotaxi :       Hot Like Fiya (Deejay Theory Remix)
another sureshot from my homie in the Bay.

Stas :       Panama Accordion
big beat inna South American street market stylee. Thanks for DJ Gozar for this one.

Quantic & Nidia Gongora :       Muevelo Negro
cotdaaaaamn! This latest release from Señor Quantico blends sub-woofer bass synths and folkloric marimbas beautifully. Powerful vocals from Nidia take this one over the top to classic status. Just may have to remix this one…

DJ Subversivo :       Las Olas de la Mar (Subversivo Remix)
another nice one gleaned from the crates of Gozar. Check the full free ep here.

William Onyeabor :       Good Name (Joakim Remix)
Now I may have known about this guy for a loooong time (since finding a vinyl copy of “Atomic Bomb” in the Ivory Coast at age 19!) but I’m very happy that Luaka Bop is helping spread the long overdue gospel.

Lord Echo :       Digital Haircut
the Kiwi afro-disco-dub specialist returns with a vengeance! So happy for my dudes at Bastard Jazz, this whole release is TOP NOTCH. The vocals on “Moten Lava” just slay me. Do yourself a favor and get this record!

Djavan :       Nereci
and who’s gonna complain about a little vintage Brazilian funk nugget to round out the set?

Ghosts In The Machine

ghost

In preparation for my favorite holiday, the same All Hallow’s Eve that will forever remind me of drive by egg-ings and TP in the trees (probably more than horror flicks and candy), I’ve put together some dark & devilish tracks to share. I skipped over the staples that you will hear played at every party you go to this week, and instead chose to focus on some club joints that have a generally spooky vibe (rather than full-frontal Ghostbusters remixes). A lot of recent UK bass & funky house stuff has that freaky darkness that I like, so there’s a few of those tunes in here. Probably not crowd pleasers unless you’re at a warehouse rave, but then I suppose that’s all the more reason to find yourself a warehouse rave!

Screamin Jay Hawkins :       I Put A Spell On You (Jeremy Sole Remix) nice flip on an old school freaky classic by my homie Jeremy, also helpful DJ tool taking you from 105bpm to 118.

DJ Disse :       Real Roots (Electric Bass Mix) random discovery by this guy. Sometimes one song leads you to another, which leads you to another…

The Layabouts      As Long As You Believe (Jullian Gomes Remix) with vocals from Omar, and a nasty acid tasting bassline, this one is right in the pocket for me

Drake ft. Sampha      Too Much (Jessie Andrews & Jason Burns Remix) completely removed all of Drake from this song, and it works so well. Another really nice usage of funky filtered synth bass that has late night trippiness all over it- produced by a 21 year old porn star + this guy!

Gorgon City      Intentions ft. Clean Bandit LATE NIGHT STEEZ

Lxury      J.A.W.S. co-produced by Disclosure so you know it’s dope

Seal      Crazy (Bixel Boys Remix) ok, so this one’s not too “dark & spooky”, but it seemed to fit in the playlist still. More heaters from these dudes

Dabin ft. Bijou      Awakening (Kwikfiks Remix) are you not still on one? Pop another cause it’s just getting deeper thanks to Canadian beat maestro Kwikfiks

Fake Blood :       Mars now we’re back to full on freaky shit. Don’t get enough opportunities to drop this oldie but goodie, this week is the exception.

Duck Sauce :       Big Bad Wolf maybe the most obvious choice for this list, but gottdamn this one is good! So simple and effective, turns even the meek ones into werewolves when the time is right.

  • abracadabra

Huge!! I am going nuts listening to these golden cuts.

  • manliano

Love that you included Fake Blood. Killer track.

Planet Rock 1 Year Anniversary

pr-oneyear

Hard to believe it’s been a full year of rocking Saturday nights with my DJ partner in crime Canyon Cody. Our lil baby Planet Rock has grown to be one of the most raucous and consistently bumping parties on the East side of LA (or the whole city for that matter). We may have a reputation as a destination for twerkers, but there’s plenty of music snobs and old school heads in the crowd as well. We always work to keep the mixes creative, while remaining devoted to the art of moving butts. If you’re in the LA area and have been snoozing, WAKE UP and come through already! If you’re a regular, then you know what I’m talking about. For those of you too far away to join us this weekend, we put together this mixtape (featuring the 3 recent Chuck Wild remixes I posted here) to give you an idea of what we sound like live (the mix was actually recorded live to keep that authentic touch). Press play and jumpstart your weekend early!

  • Chuck Wild

Thanks Leftside! Whenever you get the babysitter, we’ll be here.

I don’t think the title of your article matches the content lol. Just kidding, mainly because I had some doubts after reading the article.

& It Was You Bootleg Remix

howtodresswell-cover

Another remix by yours truly! I swear this is the last one for a little while at least. Once again, I took a track that I was really feeling, but didn’t have a version that would fit into my dj sets, then added some boogie juice so that I could play it out. This one will be featured on the mixtape I’m wrapping up with my comrade in crime, Canyon Cody, to celebrate one year of our weekly Saturday night ‘Planet Rock’ party at The Virgil. If you are in the LA area, definitely swing through this weekend… it’s gonna get extra grimey! The mixtape should be done and posted by the end of the week, so stay tuned.

Lorde – Royals Bootleg Remix

lorde remix

Without further ado, I’d like to present my latest remix. The 16-year-old Kiwi pop sensation gets a touch of grime added to her big single for all my DJ’s and bass fiends out there. Kinda in line with the Banks remix I dropped a lil while back, this is a tune that I wanted to mix into my sets, but didn’t have a version with enough umpf (although the Lazerdisk take is nice on the slow funk tip). Mixed in some heavy 808’s and a touch of twerk to keep the kids bouncing. This is another one that will be featured on the upcoming Planet Rock Mixtape that I’m working on with Canyon Cody to celebrate one year of our weekly Saturday Night party at The Virgil. Press play and bump loudly.

  • r&b instrumentals

jesus.. this is good. so catchy, very good remix!

  • Maria MARR

It’s crazy what we can do with music, definitely limitless freedom! I love the gospel sound of the backing vocals, it gives you goose bumps. This is definitely an amazing remix!

The House That Funk Built

heidelberg

Coming at you all the way live from Oakland, CA, where the candy painted cars roll slow past local organic non-GMO everything. Had the extreme pleasure of hanging out with my best friend’s new baby (the same elusive Ixley who designed this site, and is currently working on the re-design). Feel free to congratulate the new papa in the comments if you care to, I’ll make sure he reads em. Not a lot of time to go into descriptions on all these tracks today, but trust me that they are winners! Mostly brand new tunes with a few older joints that I’ve just discovered with a lil help from my friends (Canyon Cody, DJ Just, Audiomoe, Shrimp Scampi– I SEE YOU). If you get inspiration from looking at pictures of funky-as-hell refurbished condemned buildings (like the one above), then take a heads up from my brother DJO and check out more about the Heidelberg Project in Detroit. And finally, all you people in the LA area, come through the new weeknight party that I’m doing in Hollywood with a great line-up of deejays and a beautiful spacious dancefloor: STACKED.
