¡Viva Fania!

LoMato

I had the absolute pleasure (& honor) of being the guest DJ at this week’s Subsuelo party at East Side Luv on Thursday night. This party has been one of my favorite gatherings in LA since I first moved here (almost 4 years ago! damn time flies), and now I’m happy to call every member of the crew who promotes the night my friend. Still, this is only my second time DJ-ing there, and despite the fact that I DJ in or around LA 2-3 nights a week, it’s a very rare occasion when I can play a set like the one I did this week. For starters, we were celebrating 50 years of Fania Records– for those unschooled, this is the quintessential NYC salsa record label- the same record label that fueled all my vinyl DJ sets at Bembe back in the day when I was just cutting my teeth. Then there was a live performance from Boogaloo Assasins (who absolutely killed it), and sounded about as legit as any classic Latin outfit I’ve heard since seeing Cachao, Tito Puente & Eddie Palmieri play together. And finally, Canyon Cody and I were celebrating the release of our official remix for Fania which drops next week. So that’s exciting too. Anyway, playing a lot of those classics got me inspired to pull out a playlist of some old staples of mine that haven’t seen the light of day in way too long. They aren’t all Fania, but in the vein, and strictly 60’s & 70’s recordings, which still sound perfectly fresh to my ears.

Willie Colon :       La Murga &       La Banda
the very same gangster trombonist pictured above.

Tito Puente :       Batuka
this song is about as proto-moombahton as it gets, 108bpm, huge build, dem bow conga riddim, just recorded 40 years earlier.

Celia Cruz :       Quimbara
the cuban cantante powerhouse. So thankful I got to see her live in Central Park shortly before she passed.

Batacumbele :       Se Le Ve
a cuban poly-rhythm masterpiece

Marvin Santiago :       Fuego A La Jicotea
this is what you call “salsa dura”, which basically means it burns up the dancefloor

Ray Barretto :       The Soul Drummers &       Acid
early boogaloo from the funky spiritual hippie conguero of the Fania crew.

Ralph Robles :       Banana Juana
a lost feel-good boogaloo gem that you still won’t find in the iTunes store.

Mongo Santamaria :       O Mi Shango
santeria funk jazz fusion delivered from another legendary conguero

Cachao Y Su Combo :       Malanga Amarilla
a super oldie from Cuba that still swings

Joe Bataan :       Ordinary Guy (Afrofilipino version)
and a little something smoothed out to finish off the set. This is one of maybe 10 versions of this song that Mr. Bataan recorded, perhaps the most laid back of the bunch.

Ay Chi Mamones

mamon

When I’m overwhelmed or frustrated by one of the bajillion tribulations that life throws my way on a daily basis, my go-to saying of choice, which somehow immediately manages to make me feel better, is “AY CHI MAMONES”. Rather than falling back on the classic Mexican derived slang mamón, I like to insert the plural version with reference to this mysterious fruit that I’ve never tried. A whole bundle of these mamones for every spilled glass of coffee, every inattentive driver that cuts me off, every new bill that comes in my mailbox and gets added to the pile of others that remain unpaid. There has been a veritable forest of mamoncillo trees springing out from my throat this past month. But thankfully this simple vocalization continues to produce a sweet/sour fruit in place of what could be pure cow dung. Mamones are even healthy! With all that said, I apologize again for the lack of recent posts, for this site going offline temporarily, for the new design-in-progress which lacks much of the flare of the old one… I’m working on it, and planting more mamoncillo trees in the meantime.

Lost Midas :       Head Games ft. Audris

MNEK :       Every Little Word

Cherokee :       Don't Matter ft. Darianna Everett

John Milk :       The Fool (Disco Reggae Mix)

Broadway Sounds :       Something Sensual &       Booby Trap

Donnell Jones :       U Know Whats Up (Option4 Remix)

Pharrell ft. Jay-Z :       Frontin' (Disclosure Remix)

ZHU :       Paradise Awaits

Hervé & Zebra Katz :       Tear The House Up

Curtis Harding :       Keep On Shining

Dom La Nena :       Batuque (Jeremy Sole & Atropolis Remix)

Oceaán :       Need U &       Your Side

Un Poquito Más

PoquitoMas

I’ve been anxiously awaiting the day when I could share this one with you all. I’ve been a huge fan of Marcos Garcia (aka Chico Mann) since I first saw Antibalas back in Brooklyn circa 2003. When he dropped his first Manifest Tone EP I had him come by for an interview and guest DJ set on my Passport radio show on WNYU. I probably have a recording of that somewhere and I need to dig it up… Anyway, jump ahead many years and I finally got close to a proper collabo with my remix of his single “I Feel It”. I started sending him beats hoping that one of them would catch his interest, and sure enough it finally worked. “Un Poquito Más” is the first single from my upcoming full-length on Bastard Jazz Records, with melodic marimba vibes, heavy bass, cracking drums and suave vocals by Chico, I hope you agree it’s a winner. If you dig it, please support and spread the word! Big shout out to the Vice blog Thump for the premier and positive (albeit heavily misspelled) review.

Hello Heatwave

melted

Summer is fast approaching and I, for one, am very ready. Last week saw multiple 90 degree days here in LA, which meant multiple trips to my local ice cream shop and substantial beach time. I figured a solid playlist of reggae vibes & lover’s rock would be the perfect thing to help get into the proper mind state while I gear up for the days of global warming to come. There’s some oldies and classics in the mix, but also some new heaters from beyond the island of Jamaica.

Karol Conka :       Sandalia
shouts to my man Cato for letting me know about this insanely fresh Brazilian badass

Pressure :       Love And Affection
classic for the lovers

Jah Cure :       Call On Me
all my ladies…

Sizzla :       Show Me
still the illest

Busy Signal :       Missing You
Mr. Signal captured in a sentimental mood

Gyptian :       Turn Me On
new one from the Hold Yuh crooner

Vybz Kartel & J Capri :       Mamacita (So Shifty Edit)
nice little reggaeton flavor on this dancefloor banger

Sizzla :       Blessed (Deejay Theory Remix)
my man Theory hit this so hard with the perfect mix of hip hop, dancehall & electronic

Mavado :       Never Believe You
I love this uptempo 80’s sounding beat

P18 :       La Verdolaga
a song that blew my mind when I first heard DJ Dusk play it back around 2004, still so so good.

Todd Simon & The Angel City All Star Brass Band :       Sidama de Cali
for those that don’t know, Mr. Simon is a recording beast here in LA. Featured on more dope records than I can count, including a feature on my upcoming album, this new side project of his fusing Ethiopian melodies and Colombian roots is hitting my sweet spot!

Finley Quaye :       Ultra Stimulation
an oldie that missed me when it came out but still sounds refreshingly unique in a dubbed out fashion

I Wanna Be Down

atomic-bomb

There are a lot of things that I’m excited about in the near future, but this concert tonight, paying tribute to the mysterious Nigerian synth-funk guru William Onyeabor ranks very high on the list. For those who read this blog and think my tastes are primarily limited to contemporary hipster, sweater-funk, nu-disco, house and global bass… do your research. My love of obscure vintage African records goes deep, and I actually happened upon a copy of the Atomic Bomb LP while in Cote D’Ivoire back in 2002 before I could legally drink. More than a decade later, David Byrne has put together an all-star line-up to remix and tour, promoting the bizarre lo-fi funkiness that lies within the grooves of that same record. I’m also pretty stoked about the music video I shot yesterday, my upcoming monthly DJ residency in NYC that will last all Summer, and the imminent release of all this good music I’ve been working on, but for now let’s just give thanks for Onyeabor getting covered by Hot Chip.

Nurses :       Trying To Reach You
slightly old, but new to me. Layers of vocal pads, choppy drums and plenty of nice electronic touches from this Oregonian trio

Phantogram :       Fall In Love
I keep coming back to this album and finding a new thing to love about it.

Sorceress :       Teacups
the perfect combination of swing and bounce on this solid lead single from the band formerly known as ‘Funkommunity’. Stay tuned for the full-length dropping later this month from my fam at Wonderwheel

William Onyeabor vs. Hot Chip :       Atomic Bomb
I basically said it all at the top, but this whole project makes me happy.

IAMNOBODI :       Try Me ft. Ego Ella May
soulful Detroit-style swing from this Berlin based beat head

Brandy :       I Wanna Be Down (starRo remix)
I was introduced to this LA local by my homie Canyon Cody and now I’m happy to pass on that favor. More great baby making music here.

Jhené Aiko :       The Worst
yes it’s a radio smash, but the vibe of this one and the ridiculously infectious triplet hook are worthy of sharing for those who may have missed it.

Mr Little Jeans :       The Suburbs
another artist to keep an eye on, making Arcade Fire sound 2 million percent more badass.

Moloko :       The Time Is Now (Bambino Casino Remix)
can’t remember how I got this and I don’t know anything about Bambino, sorry.

Moses Sumney :       Man On The Moon &       Lindisfarne
I saw Moses live a month ago and it was shockingly beautiful and moving. Rare thing that my eyes water up at a show, but this man had that effect on me. He is set to blow up this year, mark my words.

  • Cato

    Hey bruddah,
I gave you that Moloko track. I know because it’s a crappy bit rate & I never found a better version;)

Get Gone Remix

GetGoneRemix

Remix tiiiiiiime! Yes, once again I threw away all the hard work I put into making a song, and completely remade the music from scratch. It’s actually a very fun exercise as a producer. Remixing yourself gives you a chance to look at what you’ve made as objectively as possible, and then it provides the opportunity to reinvent yourself or express another side of your creativity. It never ceases to amaze me how different the mood and feel of a song can be, using the same chords and notes, but different sounds and structure. The other thing I love about making a remix, is that I can give it away for free. So press play, then hit download, and if you like what we’re doing, please show some support. Peace, from this here Hooligan. Also, big shout out to Mathieu Bitton for the photography and art direction.
