Pro Bro

Pro-Bro-Baja

Mission accomplished! Tacos were eaten, reef was snorkled, waves were surfed, sun was soaked and much tequila was drunk (specifically, El Jimador). After a full week of camping on the beach in Baja, tenting under tiny palapas or the occasional palm frond surf shack, I’ve returned to the internet and phone reception. It was pretty epic, and I highly recommend a similar adventure for anyone looking to get away with a few friends for cheap. Spirits are high, inspiration is flowing, and I’m feeling very ready to get busy on new tunes. I’m setting off this Summer properly with new joints from some of my favorite contemporary artists (Quadron, Omar, Alice Russell, FFD) plus a handful of other goodies you may not know.

Omar :       The Man been loving this guys voice since “Saturday” and he’s still sounding just as good here. New album forthcoming.

Alice Russell :       For A While
another veteran who’s sounding on top of her game on this new album

Quadron :       Favorite Star &       Neverland
gonna be keeping this whole album in heavy rotation.

How To Dress Well :       & It Was You
get familiar with this guy

Coma :       Missing Piece
nice deep material from these Germans

Boddhi Satva :       Ngari Konon ft. Oumou Sangare (Ancestral Soul Mix)
perfect collaboration! So glad to hear new material from Oumou, especially in the face of recent events in Mali.

Sabo & Melo :       Crema e Gusto
my dude Sabo, moombah godfather don dadda, comes correct once again on this new EP, get it!

Colm K :       The Attic
fellow Bastard Jazz beatmaker, Colm has really stepped it up on this latest spaced-out synth funk odyssee. Don’t snooze, 12″ available too.

Fat Freddy’s Drop :       Blackbird &       Mother Mother
top not new material from another one of my favorite voices, Joe Dukie and his gang of dubbed out Kiwis.

Tuesday Born :       Drop The Clouds &       Wake ft. Dnae
young blood UK producer, half of The Busy Twist, going in really deep on this recent EP.

Hello Summer

IMG_3861

I know I’ve been bouncing around a lot lately (Hawaii, Oregon, Chicago, San Francisco & Asia since January), but the trip I embark on today is different. Entirely non-work related. Unplugging completely. Gonna be sleeping in a tent on the beach actually. Focussing all my energy on surfing, snorkeling and eating tacos with good friends for the next 7 days. Haven’t been to Mexico since I was a teenager, so I’m very much looking forward to it. It’s my way of properly acknowledging a major transition and stepping forward into Summer on the good foot. No doubt I’ll be soaking up plenty of inspiration for new tunes along the way. I put together this super sunny playlist of tracks I’m feeling right now to help spread the early summer vibes.

Robin Thicke :       Blurred Lines ft. T.I. & Pharrell
I know it’s pop as all hell, but this is too good to snooze on. Major jacking of Marvin Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up”, but you won’t hear me complaining.

Laura Mvula :       Green Garden (Osage Remix)
better than the remix I was going to make. So so good.

Andrea Calabrese :       Africa Intense (Bress Mix)

Juice, Mess & Simone Farina :       Corazon (Fanelli Farina Mix)
shout to DJ Cato for this heater

Machel Montano :       Vibes Cyah Done (Jus Now Remix)
shout to DJ Nadi for this future soca bomb

Bunji Garlin ft. Nigel Rojas :       Differentology

Dub Gabriel :       My Gun (Shotnez Remix)

Popcaan :       Raving

Dieze Tigrona :       Prostituto ft. Jaloo
sweetest sounding trap-baile-funk ode to a hooker ever recorded

Mop Mop :       Kamakumba &       Phantom Of The Panther
shout out to Dangerscouse for the heads up

The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band :       Pimp
and big up my man Soul Cocina who turned me onto this

Elephant & Mosquito Remix

Afrobeat, Gumbo Funk, Zongo Junction, Captain Planet, Remix, Brooklyn, Fela Kuti, Antibalas

ZongoRemix-Cover450

Happy to announce the release of this latest remix I produced for the Brooklyn-based 10-piece afrobeat ensemble Zongo Junction. Check out the 7″ single they are also dropping today on Primary Records. They have a pretty classic sound that pays homage to Fela, Tony Allen & other afrobeat originators, but I mixed in some heavy synths and hip hop drums to give it that extra head nod bounce. It’s starting to feel like Summer around here, so I hope this one gets spins at a BBQ near you. Big shout out to the always tasty OkayAfrica.com for giving some early love to the track too. Free download, get it while it’s hot.

Classy

classy-carpet

My new studio is finally up and running! Been a lot of work and a long time coming. It may be hard for me to leave this room all Summer. Wall paint is still drying and the fresh carpet smell is strong enough to give me a head buzz. I was pondering what it would be like to cover the floor in one of those classy carpet options above, available for a good price at Linoleum City, but then I wimped out last minute (LAME, I know, but might help prolong what’s left of my sanity). Already had my first recording session in here, and my first mixing session (tons of new music will be coming soon), but this is officially my first blog post from Melon Elevado Studio, where heads get lifted. Aiiiiight?!? And now, new tunes

Goldroom :       Only You Can Show Me (ft. Mereki)

Chico Mann :       Esta Bueno
this whole new album is dope, get it.

Phoenix :       Entertainment (Hot Natured Remix)
shout out to my homie DJ Cato for this one

Lykke Li :       Little Bit (CSS Remix)

Classixx :       Holding On &       Into The Valley ft. Karl Dixon (Julio Bashmore Remix)

Matpat :       Werk That Nerve (Ben Mono Remix)

Ben Mono :       The Feel
gotdamn this Mono dude has some funky ass tracks

Blawan :       Getting Me Down

Nora En Pure :       Come With Me

Natural Self :       An Invisible Light &       Machine

Las Escondidas Remix

EscondidasRMX-Cover450

Keepin it short & sweet right now. Happy to drop this official remix I did for the newly crowned “Princes of Latin Pop” on Nacional Records. I took the og electro cumbia pop song (prod. by the legendary Toy Selectah) and flipped it with a catchy latin-house / Miami-club type of feel. Been working pretty well for me recently on unsuspecting dancefloors. Shout out to MTV Iggy for spreading the love too! Free download, so grab it while it’s hot… Also, for any of you in the SF Bay Area, I’ll be spinning good records tonite at the massive Afrolicious 6yr Anniversary bash. Come through and get silly with us!

All Hail The Flashing Lights

DiscoDieties

Been catching up on a ton of new music acquisitions, here’s a heaping handful of good ones that rose to the top of the pile. Focussing on some forward thinking outernational sounds today. From tropical NYC to Kenya to Panama via Oakland and beyond. I’m also getting very excited to make my Chicago debut this upcoming Saturday where I’ll be DJ-ing at the FEx party at Subterranean. Any of you in the Chi area, come through and say what’s up!

Rafi El :       Tra Ba (Rioux Remix) taken from this great new FREE EP on Dutty Artz records.

Owiny Sigoma Band :       Norbat Okelo this British/Kenyan group has hit a sweet spot in between rootsy folk & futuristic funk. More here.

Nairobi Matata Jazz :       Mapenzi Hayana Daktari (Frankie Francis Edit) the ever reliable Soundway records has put together a great collection of vintage East African gems, and a very tasty set of remixes & edits to accompany it.

Schlachthofbronx :       Apizaco these German global bass kingpins have a knack for nailing the simple banger. This one happens to be particularly sunny and just what I need right now.

DJ Quality :       Bacha Duro bachata trap. Someone had to do it, and I’m really glad it was quality. Check the EP on Bersa Discos.

Raka Dun :       No Tan Listo Los Rakas boys staying busy as always. This single comes with a fresh new video too.

La Mecanica Popular :       La Paz Del Freak sonido super psicoledico! Possibly the most tripped out salsa ever recorded, taken from this new 7″ on Names You Can Trust.

John Cameron :       Swamp Fever cream of the crop, vintage sound-library funk gets a proper reissue from Strut Records

Analog Players Society :       Korosi
from BK producer Amon, comes this new EP of Guinean soul meets steppers funk.

Wilde Belle :       June &       Love Like This this brother / sister indy duo have mixed a nice bit of roots reggae and afro flavor into their new release.
