Bastard Jazz // 2013

BJ-2013

While I haven’t had a chance to put together my own personal “best of” for the year, my brethren at Bastard Jazz Records have made an excellent mix composed entirely of their releases from this year- plus a few snippets of unreleased material (including something from my upcoming Capt. Planet album). Starting off with some top-notch downtempo and future funk, the mix picks up and travels into some Caribbean and Afro styles, classic disco, and a touch of house as well. It’s impressive to see how much great material they’re putting out, and I’m happy to be a part of the Bastard familia alongside heads like Lord Echo, Potatohead People, Sol Power All-Stars, Starship Connection, Colm K and more. Props to my homies DJ DRM & Erik The Red! Check out the soundcloud page for a full tracklist and links to buy individual tracks.

Mixtape Riot Radio: #010

Please excuse the lag in posts… hopefully this latest podcast, packed to the brim with goodies, will make up for it. As always, it’s an eclectic aural exploration. Travelling from South American future dub, to headnod-inducing indy soul, to global bass and funky house- I tried to connect the dots between a wide range of fresh new sounds in classic Mixtape Riot style. New songs from Tremor, Mayer Hawthorne, Misun, Banks, Atropolis, Uproot Andy, Superhumanoids and more. Don’t let the “back to school” sales scare you, it’s STILL SUMMER in Mixtape Riot-land.

Esto Es Candela Remix

PalenqueRMX-Cover450

Brand new official remix I did for Dutty Artz drops today as part of the excellent Palenque Records Remixed project. Rootsy Colombian folk music gets updated for the dancefloor by some of the heaviest names in global bass music (features tracks from So Shifty, Thornato, Geko Jones, Atropolis, Boima & more). I’m honored to be a part of this project, and the entire album is really top notch. Jeff Guerra wrote this highly informative article that goes into more depth about the background of Palenque music, how this album came into being, and even has interview snippets from some of the musicians involved (myself included). Also, check out the cool promo video, and please support by purchasing on iTunes if you dig the sounds!

Mixtape Riot Radio: #009

MTR-Episode09

Kicking off Summer properly, this latest mix I put together for BrooklynRadio.com is thoroughly soaked in tropical sun and even kinda smells like fresh salty air. Let the heavy dose of tasty brain food test your limitations for vibe overload, as you press play and drive an imaginary drop top to an endless white sand beach. Soul, Dub, Brazilian beats, House, and even a touch of Soca for good measure. Featuring new material from Quadron, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Disclosure, TOKiMONSTA y mucho mas.

Elephant & Mosquito Remix

Afrobeat, Gumbo Funk, Zongo Junction, Captain Planet, Remix, Brooklyn, Fela Kuti, Antibalas

ZongoRemix-Cover450

Happy to announce the release of this latest remix I produced for the Brooklyn-based 10-piece afrobeat ensemble Zongo Junction. Check out the 7″ single they are also dropping today on Primary Records. They have a pretty classic sound that pays homage to Fela, Tony Allen & other afrobeat originators, but I mixed in some heavy synths and hip hop drums to give it that extra head nod bounce. It’s starting to feel like Summer around here, so I hope this one gets spins at a BBQ near you. Big shout out to the always tasty OkayAfrica.com for giving some early love to the track too. Free download, get it while it’s hot.
