Regularly Scheduled Daydreaming

brigit

A long hot weekend up in the mountains, meant a very very long hot road trip getting there and back. Truth is, you can’t be mad when you’ve got good company and new music to listen to. I like to think of my extended daydreams on planes, trains & highways as an essential part of the creative process. Maybe I wasn’t scheming a global takeover, so much as how to pass the slow RV pulling a boat on a trailer, but I know there’s some head-clearing benefit nonetheless.

Sola Rosa :       Promise (ft. Oliver Daysoul)
great single from Sola’s latest album. Check the top notch Tall Black Guy remix as well

Booker T. Jones :       Sound The Alarm (ft. Mayer Hawthorne) &       All Over The Place (ft. Luke James)
The legendary organ maestro is back on STAX, and sounding surprisingly fresh (with help from the superproducer Avila Bros). The whole album is worth a listen, but the title track with Mayer is the standout for sure.

Superhumanoids :       So Strange
fans of Little Dragon will find lots to like on this new album.

GANZ :       Can't Stop
definitely taking cues from Hudson Mohawk, but I’m not mad at the epic-ness.

Atropolis :       Reza Por Mi (ft. Lido Pimienta)
my Cumba Mela homie has come supremely correct with this excellent full-length. The whole record is great, but this song (and the accompanying video directed by another old friend) makes me smile every time.

Kon :       Blow Me A Kiss (ft. Amy Douglas)
Very glad to see this legendary NYC crate digger and DJ step up as a producer. Deep disco is the name of the game on this one.

Franz Ferdinand :       Stand On The Horizon (Todd Terje Extended Mix)
for me the song starts at 5:30, but there’s a lot of cool moments throughout, as you’d expect from this cool collabo.

LBCK :       Call My Name
mid-tempo slinky funk thats perfect for early evening head bobbing. More from these Long Beach kids.

FKJ :       So Much To Me &       Instant Need
a couple new disco-fied winners from French Kiwi Juice.

Lorde :       Bravado &       Biting Down
it’s hard to be mad at this 16-yr-old chantuese when she’s putting out songs this good. I’m sure there’s some producer big wig mastermind behind a lot of the material, but her voice remains kinda undeniable.

Shigeto :       Miss U &       Detroit Part 1
deep organic spacey beats from this Midwest Ghostly dude.

Mixtape Riot Radio: #010

Please excuse the lag in posts… hopefully this latest podcast, packed to the brim with goodies, will make up for it. As always, it’s an eclectic aural exploration. Travelling from South American future dub, to headnod-inducing indy soul, to global bass and funky house- I tried to connect the dots between a wide range of fresh new sounds in classic Mixtape Riot style. New songs from Tremor, Mayer Hawthorne, Misun, Banks, Atropolis, Uproot Andy, Superhumanoids and more. Don’t let the “back to school” sales scare you, it’s STILL SUMMER in Mixtape Riot-land.

Same here Charlie – These are keeping me awake on my morning commute, and I’ve just downloaded 10 for a 4 hour plane journey.

Many thanks, please keep it up!

I don’t think the title of your article matches the content lol. Just kidding, mainly because I had some doubts after reading the article.

Drown Out The Chainsaw

We’re approaching that late Summer slow-down, but I somehow still feel like I’m forever on the run. Semi-constant trimming of trees outside my studio window for the past week certainly isn’t helping me find any peace of mind. Thankfully, good music (injected directly into my brain via large noise-cancelling headphones) generally provides the remedy. Working on lots of new music, and brainstorming a way to save humanity from the seemingly inevitable future where we visit fake tropical islands (oh wait, that’s the present). Press play and share my sanctuary in these recent audio acquisitions (shouts to Badkiss, Garth Trinidad & Jon Oliver for some of these).

Moderat :       Bad Kingdom

Barbarossa :       Turbine

Misun :       Coffee (Cousin Cole & Nacey Edit) &       Hills and Trails

Klaves :       So Fine

Bonobo :       Emkay

Flume :       Left Alone ft. Chet Faker (Ta-Ku Remix)

Mizz Beats :       Sanctuary

Tremor :       Huella (Frikstailers Remix)

José James :       Vanguard (fLako Remix)

Floating Points :       Wires

Banks – Warm Water Bootleg Remix

Got inspired after playing the original on repeat and wanting to mix it into my hip hop sets. Couldn’t get an acapella, so bootleg it is. If you haven’t made it out to the weekly Saturday night party that I throw with my brother from another, Canyon Cody, then let this be extra incentive. We generally devote a hefty portion of the mix to good music with big ass 808 bass like this. We’re working on a full EP of remixes & edits to celebrate the Planet Rock 1 year anniversary in September. Stay tuned. Big shout out to PrefixMag for the early shine too!

Missing Whiskey

Today marks day 23 without a single drop of alcohol for me. This may not sound like too difficult a task for many of you out there, but when you drink as often and as much as I do (I’ve put away a half bottle of Jameson to myself on certain nights), then the challenge becomes much more substantial. It certainly doesn’t help that I work in bars and clubs, surrounded by a free supply of beverages, and have been doing this since before I was of legal age. I’m not an alcoholic (thank god I didn’t get my grandpa’s genes for that), but I do seriously love drinking, and I plan to resume promptly when my one month challenge is up. How is this relevant to today’s musical selections? Well, this is most definitely NOT a party playlist. It could be that my increased sobriety has mellowed me out a bit, or it might also just be the nice summer breeze coming in my window. Either way, you get a seriously smoothed out set of soulful downtempo goodness to enjoy.

Close :       My Way (ft. Joe Dukie)

Banks :       Warm Water

A/T/O/S :       A Taste Of Struggle (Commodo Mix)

Colette :       When The Music's Loud

AlunaGeorge :       You Know You Like It (DJ Snake Remix)

Gossip :       Four Letter Word

Alpine :       Seeing Red

Rhye :       Open (Bondax Remix)

When Saints Go Machine :       IODINE (Robin Hannibal Remix)

Francis & The Lights :       ETC

Deep In Concentration

Quick injection of mid-week beats for all you fiends in need. Some grimey sounds, some smoothed out bizniz, and a touch of make-you-feel-good-and-kiss-the-sky type ish. Never studied music in school, but if I did, I would want to be in a class like this. Shouts to DJ Cato, DJ AC, & BadKiss for some of today’s tunes- where would I be without my friends?!?

The Rub (ft. Lil Fame & Misun) :       Feel You (Marco Polo Remix) DJ Ayres & DJ Eleven (aka these guys) have thrown their monthly Brooklyn bash for years now. This party was definitely a major inspiration for my own Planet Rock jump off here in LA, and now they’re finally making music together which reflects the diverse mix of hip hop, electronic & soul sounds that they’re known for spinning. This makes me happy.

Misun :       Sharpshooter discovered this singer from the song above, there’s more where this came from… check it

Malinchak :       Beside Me on the smoothed out 90’s tip

RAC :       Hollywood (ft. Penguin Prison) first original tune by remix meistro RAC?!? Leave it to ole crafty Mountain Dew to make it happen

The Dream :       Loving You Crazy the prodigal son of R&B, the wandering mystical crooner/producer who says whatever he damn well feels and manages to make it sound good. Yeah, good new tune from that dude.

Classixx (ft. Nancy Whang) :       All You're Waiting For (Switch Remix) so glad to hear this spacey synthed-out nu-disco take on this tune. It sounds like Switch doing his version of Todd Terje.

Daft Punk :       Lose Yourself To Dance (Simøne Remix) because it’s hard to play the original and not be played out, and because this just works.

Sharam Jey :       Gonna Get You (w/ Night Talk) &       Over Me (w/ Tapesh) hauws muzik. late night dirty dancing is bound to ensue when this comes on.

Visti & Meyland :

      ”Yes

@https://mixtaperiot.com/wp/wp-content/media/YesMaamRemix.mp3″ volslider=”n” flow=”y” ind=”y”]funky old Southern folk sample meets future gypsy electronic glitch-house. I dig.

David West & Ida Engberg :       Abataka having a crappy day? slow morning? Step in dog poop? Put this one on and watch the big red african sunrise melt away all your petty problems.

  • Dangerscouse

All good, some better than others for me, with Misun, Sharam Jey, Visti & Meyland and David West & Ida Endberg being top of the pile….makes me want to stand in dog poop. Fuckin fantastic tune. It’s on a comp called ‘It Began In Africa’ on Kitball Records, which I’m going to check out right now.

I think you should change your last comment in the first paragraph, to where would we be without your friends…they regularly dig up some gems
