Guest Mix: BadKiss

I met Ms. Christina Badkiss at a cool lil spot in Manila where, after just a few minutes of hearing her spin, I knew immediately that she was my type of DJ. Mixing seamlessly between funky breaks, soulful house, hip hop, broken beat & bass tunes, she clearly had a keen sense of what works on the dancefloor. It barely even surprised me when an impromptu B-Boy cypher broke out- headspins, windmills and all. To complete the picture, Ms. Badkiss would make sure to sneak out of the DJ booth at every available opportunity to bust some dance moves herself, which is something I can relate to 100%. Since then, we’ve stayed in touch over email, and she continues to hit me up with dope new tunes that I often end up sharing here on the blog. Getting her to record a guest mix was just the next logical step. On “Still Waters Run Deep” you can hear some of her soulful house selections- minimal, simple, and deep- which make a perfect soundtrack for chilling, or for uprocking, depending on your mood. Deep Thoughts From The Outhouse

After a beautiful week in the woods with fam, I’m back in my LA studio catching up on the many gigabytes of new music that I recently pilfered from friends. In addition to daily swimming in ponds, jumping into waterfalls, picking veggies from the garden and catching fireflies at dusk, we celebrated the wedding of my own Ma Dukes to her new hubby. Best believe, I made the reception party get loose with a long set of classics (under a tent on a gorgeous grassy hill top). Belly full of fresh kale & arugula, I’m feelin juiced for this week’s parties, including my guest set at the raucous Tormenta Tropical party on Friday night alongside Paul Devro, Deejay Theory, Oro11 y mas. If you’re in the LA area, come through!

Flume :       Sleepless ft. Anthony For Cleopatra featured on the last MTR radio show, this crispy, soulful, downtempo joint is too good not to share

Mayer Hawthorne :       Her Favorite Song (Oliver Remix) I know, I shared new Mayer last week too, but this new single getting remixed by one of my favorite production teams around is making my week

Back East

Still feels like home: waiting for late night subways in sweltering heat, on platforms covered in the black funk of decades past, walking into art museums for the free AC, stumbling upon dope concerts in the park, the curious wonders of endless stoop sales. It was less than a handful of days, but I’m very glad I got to soak in some Summer in the city. Huge thanks to my man DJ Cato for putting together a great rooftop poolside bash in Soho on Sunday. It was amazing to catch up with so many old friends while taking in the gorgeous view- with a firework finish no less! Now I’m back out in the hinterland of New Hampshire for the 4th and beyond, but I had to give a little update with some new heaters I’ve been keeping in rotation. Also, big up to my homegirl in Manila DJ Christina Badkiss whose crates I jacked for a bunch of today’s tunes, expect a featured mix from her very soon!

Brand new official remix I did for Dutty Artz drops today as part of the excellent Palenque Records Remixed project. Rootsy Colombian folk music gets updated for the dancefloor by some of the heaviest names in global bass music (features tracks from So Shifty, Thornato, Geko Jones, Atropolis, Boima & more). I’m honored to be a part of this project, and the entire album is really top notch. Jeff Guerra wrote this highly informative article that goes into more depth about the background of Palenque music, how this album came into being, and even has interview snippets from some of the musicians involved (myself included). Music with Friends

Very happy to announce that 2 (very different) projects I’ve been involved with for a while now have finally gotten official release. First up is the full-length album “Undone” by my good friend Arian Saleh. With an entirely unique mix of styles on this record (dubstep, gypsy, folk, electronic…), the project still manages to sound very cohesive. In addition to Arian’s standout lyrics, there’s amazing string work on here by the legendary (Grammy Award-winning) cellist Dave Eggar. Yeah, pretty cool project to be involved in. I am proud to say I produced half the songs on here (all the electronic ones). Check out the video for Underhill above and take a listen to one of my favorite cuts from the record below, then go get the whole thing and support! Also, just a lil while prior my homies Can’t Stop Won’t Stop released their new album of classic boom-bap hip hop and dancefloor funk (which features a few tracks produced by yours truly) called “Wildebeest”. It’s also up on iTunes, so grab it while it’s hot. Moody electronic to boom bap… I don’t tend to limit myself to one particular steez. Cheers to the sounds that know no bounds!
